OK. I've read enough. I'm replacing my broken 505 with a 650, possibly sometime next week. Enough people have posted that the screen was better, which is all I need to hear. (And it being lighter doesn't hurt, either, although I never thought my 505 was heavy.)

Why do you think people still use the iPhone over Android devices? The user experience is far superior even though Android OS is much more powerful and customizable. That being said, Sony trumps Amazon for a user like me. |

I had my mother order one this weekend. Right now, it's one of the cheapest 6" readers available... (not counting the Kindle, my mother has absolutely no use for it, as she'd have to convert all books to mobi, after removing the DRM). |

@ Boston [BUT when I switched the font size to L(arge), I realized it wasn't really practical. But with the screen clarity improvement, perhaps I can use the (M) edium font][/QUOTE]
Please will you post if you find the medium font works? Perhaps even a photo would be ossible with the different font sizes so we can see how much content is possible on the screen. Good to know there is someone else out there with fingernails and a need for a larger font! |

But here are some points of reference: - I need 1.25 magnification reading glasses..my eyesight is still decent but at the point where I occasionally need for very fine print or the lighting/contrast isn't good (a sign of getting older) - On the Kindle, I use a font size that is between the Sony's medium and large font (The one drawback on my PRS-505 is that I use a larger font than I need because the one below it is too small to read comfortably). I could easily read with the medium font on the newer models...it could be because of the improved clarity -or- the store lighting -or- combination of both. Personally, I would find the large font on the PRS-350 not usable. I read very fast and while the page turns are faster, it's not instantaneous (e.g. there is still a small flash in between). And if my eyesight were even a bit worse off than it is or lighting conditions weren't ideal, I would probably need the Large font. As much as I fell in love with the 350 and want a 5 inch reader for the portability, I think anyone who needs reading glasses but doesn't want to use them should consider the 650...or at least consider there will be an adjustment to the change when moving from a larger reader. But that's me - I tend to "speed read" (my brain scans while reading). But my mother uses a larger font on her Kindle that I have the same gripe about...but it doesn't seem to bother her...it's what's she needs and is used to. Perhaps there are PRS-300 users who use the Large font and don't think the lack of content displayed at once and frequent page turns an issue. Last edited by Boston; 09-06-2010 at 11:14 AM. |

Both phones are far superior to their predecessors, the "regular old crappy cell phone." I had a phone where you pushed the RED button to turn it ON (and a GREEN button right on the opposite side, doing nothing)! That's exactly the opposite of everything we are ever taught in terms of color association. Maybe it made sense to an engineer or a designer, but not to an end user. The iPhone is totally intuitive, and so is the Android. They basically both did the for cell phones that Macs did for computers: made it so regular people could just use it. So all this to say that the original point still stands. People respond quite favorably to a superior user experience. The easier and more intuitive the device is to use, the more accessible it is, and (hopefully) the more it will sell. -Pie |

The "zoom" feature is exactly that, it allows you to zoom in on a page...when I first tried it, I thought it was the answer..but then realized that it cut off the sides of the page ![]() ![]() |

Some other personal observations:
I didn't like the note taking capability at all. I assume its just like the PRS-600 but I only know how the Kindle does it. First, I was suprised that the Sony had no keyboard entry for note taking (the popup keyboard is only for search and dictionary best I could tell). My handwriting was barely legible with the stylus input - Plus its annoying how it shows on the screen. I prefer the way the Kindle does it, which is more like Excel or word - a little icon showing there is a note which you can view in a pop up box. Again, this is a matter of preference. UPDATE/CORRECTION - You CAN use the keyboard and icon/display - just neither the salesperson nor I could figure it out. Back to the font sizes - the more I look, the more I think the 350 won't work for these aging eyes. There was something that I noticed -- the PRS-300 seems to have better font sizes, albeit more limited, for a 5" reader. The medium font is more like something between the Medium and Large Font on the other readers. Maybe its because it was different books, but it was definitely noticeable. As I said the zoom, doesn't let you refine the font size for reading. End of the day - I think I am going to hold off. I'm glad to see a new touch screen technology which doesn't take away from the clarity but can be used by those of us with fingernails. But I don't really need/want a touch screen for my reader and at its current price point, I just can't justify the upgrade for the better screen and size/weight reduction (which are nothing to sneeze at...if they offered a lower-priced version without the touch screen, I'd upgrade in a heartbeat). Takes these for what they are -- pictures taken with an older cell phone and then compressed. (these were needlessly compressed before posting - reposted below)

Wow, the 350's screen looks like quite a step up from the 300's screen. Thanks for posting the pictures, Boston.

I just realized the I didn't need to compress these before posting (some boards I have to) because MR compresses the photo and then links to the original size.
Here are the same pictures with link to the uncompressed photos: 350 Large Font 350 Medium Font 650 Large Font 650 Medium Font 650 Notes 350vs300 (unit size comparison) 350 Large font vs 300 Medium Font 650 Landscape with Notes |

I will be honest with you.
Mobile phone pics don't make any sense. To capture quality of eInk screen one should use a very good quality camera. No offense meant. |
