Just ordered the EXOPC Slate
As an EXOPC forum member I was able to preorder the EXOPC Slate. Will be shipped on Oct 15th. Mainly because of the ePub/Mobipocket exclusivity issues with eReaders I decided to leave the world of great screens but with terrible exclusivity issues. With Amazon now offering kindle software options for different devices why are they still doing there best to kill eReaders?
I will now be able to read any book, magazines and newspapers. No matter the format I can install on this Windows 7 Slate. Nice size for PDF's and will have Wifi. Cons are a heavier than the eReaders and may produce some heat but I like the tradeoff. |

it's really beyond me why you didn't get an ipad, but a windows 7 tablet. Windows 7 is a desktop resource hoggin os that wasn't designed to be used for touch, and won't run on arm cpus.
To need 1gb of ram to boot on a tablet is ridiculous. This thing will be hot, laggy, heavy and have the worst possible battery life. It will be a thick keyboardless laptop, a sheer anachronism. Good luck with it, and my intention isn't to spoil your purchase, but like I said it's beyond me why anyone would go with this option. Even the inferior android could be hosted on some half decent ipad knock offs, but windows 7? Last edited by harryE123; 09-04-2010 at 10:36 PM. |

An iPad is a closed system. You are at the whim of Apple and it is not a real OS. You are all wrong about the EXPOC. It will not run hot it and it will not lag. At least as a general purpose reader and resource device. Any large program I will run on the desktop. It is 2lbs which is very heavy compared to most eReaders but in general not really that bad. The iPad is 1.5 lbs and with 3G it is 1.6 lbs. The iPad has a better viewing angle but the EXOPC has better resolution. The EXOPC width is 9.8 inches and the iPad is 7.47. A difference but not enormous. The iPad is a toy and the EXOPC is a real device. You are not spoiling my purchase because this device is going to be fantastic.

If I get a tablet that size, it will more likey be a windows one. I would like linux or android better, but some program i would like to run on it are windows only. iPad ? way to limited IMHO. Android inferior to iOS ?? **chukules **. Android do much more than iOS. And it's more instinctive than iOS. |

I have no great desire to own a tablet, having already an iphone, a sony reader, a PSP and a netbook in addition to a desktop computer and an HTPC. However, I can certainly understand the appeal of a Windows 7 based slate over iOS. One thing I was shocked to find out about when I first got my iPhone is 3/4 of the videos on the Internet don't work on it since it doesn't support flash. Given that a tablet's primary function is to watch video and surf the Internet, I consider the iPad's lack of flash support to be a critical flaw. And yes, I know Youtube can be watched, but many, many other web sites won't work unless you jail break and then you void the warranty. Then again, like I said, I have enough screens to stare at. I can't imagine having yet another one to sit around.

It starts shipping on Oct 15th so it will be awhile before I have it. Truth be told I am a Microsoft Wintel fan but I can still be very critical. It is not inexpensive and I am buying it to handle a number of jobs. I am concerned with the weight. As a reader 2lbs is probably at the edge of acceptance. I am also slightly concerned with heat. EXOPC has told us they have made this thing cold. In fact they are working to optimize and slow the fan down. I want this to be my complete reference device. If I want to read an ePub or Mobipocket book or any Magazine or newspaper I expect not to have any issues. If I want to connect to things like wikipedia I expect it to just work. I want to also install Microsoft Visual Studio. Not to develop programs but to be able to store and run programs to use as a reference. I own an iRex Digital reader and I do love it. Great screen and works fine. I didn't like their move to ePub. I didn't upgrade and I wish I could use it the way I expect to use this Slate.

Does it come with a stylus? While I have no desire for a windows slate, I do hope you enjoy your pu chase and look forward to your review.

I call the Windows mobile 6.5 and the soon to be released Wndows phone 7 a partial OS as is Android and the iPhone OS. I am not calling Unix or the Mac a partial OS. I have worked with Unix and Linux at work and like those systems. Jail breaking while now considered legal by the courts will still be for the few and brave. It is closed because Apple decides what goes into the App store. To be fair the new Microsoft phone will have a store that will also be closed. On a Slate that is not a phone and a real computing device I don't want my arms tied. When Apple decides to come out with a Slate that is based on the Mac then they can call it a full computing device. Certainly there are advantages and disadvantages to a light OS or full OS on these new devices. There are rumored Slate devices that may come out using the new Windows phone 7 OS. I would be critical of these Slate devices with a Win Phone 7 OS in them. Last edited by timezone; 09-06-2010 at 07:38 PM. |

I believe it will come with a stylus but it will have a capacitive screen so you will be able to push and pull with your fingers to enlarge, shrink and move images on the desktop. It also will display HD multimedia.

That has been the biggest criticism of the Slate. I have lived with smartphones that did not go the distance by keeping a charging device nearby. I don't expect too much of a problem because I am usually near an outlet. I also have a decent battery charger that can keep these things charged for a number of days.
