I need a "CD and mp3" button: most of my library was bought as CDs, I still have the CDs but have also converted it all to MP3.

The ease of doing that as compared to making an ebook IMO could slow down the uptake of ereaders.

(I chose CD since that's the format most of my music was bought in).

From my understanding (and experience) a .m4a song is around 7mb, whereas a lossless version would use 20mb+ for the same song. It doesn't make storage economical sense, especially if you can't hear the difference (which I couldn't; then again don't take my word for it if you don't believe me, i am only a teen after all and wouldn't know anything about quality music! )

Also, if your going to use a portable media player those lossless files are going to drag you down hugely in terms of battery life.
Just putting it out there
Sure this is a downside, but there are workarounds/upsides:

a. first when a 3tb drive costs $250 or so, there really is no size restriction anymore.
b. lossless means rip once for all life, it's future proof, and if you do get a good quality stereo you will hear the difference
c. itunes can let you convert lossless m4a track on the fly to lower quality aac to use on your ipods when you transfer the tracks, so not much impact on your ipod either, and let's face it there storages have grown too.

Lossless is a myth or at best a misnomer. Particularly when talking about digital.

Analog signals are limited, digital moreso.

I'd say CD with mp3 a close second.

for sure, but they are truly lossless in terms of retaining all the digital signal of the original cd.

I still have a handful of film bodies too... don't want to sell them (probably couldn't even if I wanted to) but haven't shot a roll of film in almost eight years. Every so often I take out one of the bodies just to listen to the sound of the shutter going 'ka-chunk!'

I should save THAT sound to MP3. That might be worth something someday!

Um, about 700 CDs full of MP3s (music and audiobooks), about 150+ CDs and cassettes, and a couple of hundred vinyl albums.

It takes a lot of space.

And about 10GB of MP3/flac etc not yet burned.

Geez. Probably take a century to listen to it.

I have almost a thousand CDs and a little over a hundred LPs, although I voted CD. I've managed to convert about three-quarters of my collection to lossless for portable use; all of my home listening is done via the original format.

Mainly mp3, but all backed up on CD. WE suffered a flood a few years ago, and the only music I had that that made it through ok was on CD.
