If you use a large enough sample rate, CDs ripped to MP3s sound just fine. I know what you mean about finding enough time to rip several hundred CDs. I had to retire to find enough time to do a little over 400!

I spent a few days, a few years ago, ripping a few thousands cds...wouldn't do it again for sure!!!
btw, try setting itunes to rip to apple lossless, it's larger in size but they way hd capacities are growing it's not big deal, and it doesn't degrade quality. |

Both CD and MP3 in the main.
I am in the middle of ripping our CD collection to the NAS. I am using MP3 format (easier really and compatible with a wide range of players). We only have about 50 records left now and no cassettes or cartridges. |

The reason I still buy CDs is either I want the cover art, etc. that comes with CDs or they are from independent artists for which no downloads are available. |

Mine's mainly CD, I'm slowly converting things to MP3, but with over 1,000 CD's in just my classical stuff it's a daunting task that I keep putting off actually doing. Same as my movie collection. I'd love to rip all my DVD's (and possibly blu-rays) to digital files, but every time I actually go to do it I get overwhelmed and end up doing nothing.

word to the wise, try converting your cds to lossless formats, so you won't re-rip them eventually. If you absolutely have to rip them to lossy ones, opt for aac (apple uses that) that is vastly superior to mp3, and as a last resort lame mp3 is the best mp3 encoder (though not really comparable to any of the other options I mentioned).

CD, MP3, and FLAC. FLAC is used to listen over the network at home for better sound quality, MP3 is to listen to my home stuff while I am at work. MP3 size of 2.67 mb is FLAC size of 18.7 mb - 2.67 uses up way less bandwidth, so hopefully my use will continue to be ignored at work.

In regards to the lossless formats, its best not to use them..
From my understanding (and experience) a .m4a song is around 7mb, whereas a lossless version would use 20mb+ for the same song. It doesn't make storage economical sense, especially if you can't hear the difference (which I couldn't; then again don't take my word for it if you don't believe me, i am only a teen after all and wouldn't know anything about quality music! ![]() Also, if your going to use a portable media player those lossless files are going to drag you down hugely in terms of battery life. Just putting it out there |

The advantage of old age... I don't have to worry about the sound quality of my stored music. I can't hear the difference between music from a wax cylinder or a high quality LP record. I save a fortune on speakers!

I'm lucky; the owld ears still hear well enough although I've lost a bit in the upper end. Fortunately, I can just crank up the upper end in the equalizer and all's well again. However, the rest of my body is falling apart.

A few years ago I paid my son to rip my 300-odd vinyl albums to CD. My proper, bought CD collection is about another 500. Mostly though I actually listen to mp3 - just rip a few as and when I'm in the mood for that particular artist or genre. Eventually I guess everything will be format shifted to mp3...by which time that will be an ancient format that no one except old timers with degraded hearing and who don't know any better will be listening to.
