Anybody knows how much customs charge (and VAT?)will one expects to pay if buying a new sony reader online from US? I'm asking this because I plan to order one from US for my Canadian friend's birthday, but not sure of all the charges there at the customs in Canada.
Any advice will be welcomed. Thanks

Charges are assumed by the carrier that will deliver and transfered to you. 6.0% federal + the provincial rate (different depending on province) if your carrier recieved it in the same province it is delivered to. If not it's only federal taxes. The most precise way of knowing is through the carrier.

No idea. I'm in Québec and we pay no taxes on electronics coming from the States.

The taxes for Ontario are:
GST 6%
PST 8%

If it's a gift you should declare it as such because there are exemptions. If you're shipping from the US and you have time it's best to ship USPS. They have a flat $5 Brokerage fee. I would caution against shipping regular ground couriers because they charge hidden brokerage fees. It's cheaper to ship Express where the brokerage fees are included. The following is an example but FedEx is the same.

... many stories of people buying a $45 item in the USA and spending the same again for shipping.

Beware, a gift has a maximum value of $65.00, the rest of the amount is taxed.

Hi Zen,
Did you get them to ship via UPS? I am thinking about placing an order over the weekend.
