MPEG? It'd be huge!
Why not H264?

I have a player which can stream video, and while I've tried it, it looks horrendous. I'm sticking with physical media until the situation improves, but I refuse to purchase a disc I'll watch once or twice in five years. I made that mistake when I was younger with DVDs...

We have 900 DVD's and 15 blu-ray. I have converted a lot of those to AVI files for our HTPC. Much less hassle firing up a movie from the NAS than wading through DVD menus.

This includes TV series as well.

You might want to look into a company named Slysoft. With their software you can rip a the separate VOB files on a DVD into a single VOB. A VOB is just a renamed mpeg2 file, so if your player won't recognize it just change the file extension.

It's larger than most avi's depending on your encoding, but it is the exact same quality as the DVD. Everytime I've tried re-encoding DVDs to a smaller file size the graininess and color blocks have upset me. I don't like it when there are splotches of blacks inside what's supposed to be black...

BluRay will never become the dominant format as pretty much all sales in the future will be downloads.

We buy DVDs, which we use for TV viewing. I also compress them to view on our Zunes/iPhones.

I haven't seen a good free Bluray decoder/compressor yet, so I'm holding off on even starting to buy the format. No HDTV at our house yet anyway, so we're not missing anything.

We have a decent collection of blu-ray, but *most* (as the question asks) of our collection is in regular DVD format.

DVD. But my blu ray collection is catching up quickly. I'd say in the next year it will be equal to or surpass my DVD collection. I buy all new releases on blu ray now and some of my fav older releases have been replaced with blu ray.

I'm making the adjustment I usually do with surveys, and trying to fit my mapping on one that doesn't work for me, in that "mpeg" doesn't work as a type here: after all, DVDs are encoded in MPEG-2, and Blu-Ray in MPEG-4. So I'll take the first response as meaning "other". Most of what I have I currently download in AVI form (divx / xvid = mpeg-4), though some is MKV (h.264 / x264 = mpeg-4), while older stuff is SVCD (mpeg-2) or VCD (mpeg-1), and some are in a wide range of containers (ogm, mov, mp4, asf, wmv, more).

I voted VHS, but actually I have more purchased movies in BetaMax format. Unfortunately, my BetaMax player no longer works.

Since I have a couple hundred VHS tapes around here with recorded shows and movies that I've never watched, I no longer record things to watch. So, no DVR for me. If I don't catch it real-time, I don't see it unless I make the effort to find it on-line and watch it right when I find it.

I think that I have only around 40 DVD's, if that many. I tend to buy only obscure or personal favorite keepers.

Mostly in DVD at the moment, but all are being slowly but surely converted to MPEG/H264. Mostly buying DVDs as well - very rarely rent movies. Have zero interest in BluRay <shrug>

I have some fitness dvds (about 100) and television boxed sets, but I don't buy much anymore. I rent from a Netflix-type service and only buy fitness dvds and the occasional TV show if I love it.

I worry about keeping things all electronic because I don't want to max out my Dropbox account on large movie files and then have to pay for an upgrade. So the only things I have ripped to computer are things I teach with (so I can transfer them to my iPad for use at school) and the fitness dvds I have from the 'Ten Minute Solution' series. Each segment is only ten minutes long, so the space commitment is not huge, and the design of these workouts is for mixing and matching. So having them in digital form is better because I can mix and match across different disks, which is hard to do in physical media form (i.e. I can program a 30-minute routine in 3 seconds using my iTunes library and include 3 sections, each from different original disks).

But for things like a two-hour movie, I don't want to devote the time and effort to rip to computer, and I would probably just watch it once anyway, so I am happy to rent.

I have over 900 DVDs and about 250 BDs. Since my DVD collection is much larger that's the option I went with, even though any new releases I buy are on Blu, if available. I also don't mind replacing titles, like Criterions, when I can get them for a good price. I'm glad that they're putting out a decent number of classic and obscure films, at least enough of them to lighten my wallet.

I find it strange that I've had no problem switching over to my Kindle yet I can't imagine giving up my music or movie discs. Perhaps it's because with a leather cover my Kindle feels somewhat like a lighter hardcover book. I guess I just really like having a physical music and movie library close to hand and downloading just doesn't cut it for me. The fact that I have spent time and money putting together decent systems for movies and music may also play a part in that.
