I can't find the exact quote, but I think one of the profoundest observations I've come across was made by the English humourist Willie Rushton (iirc).
He observed that while Shakespeare's plays undoubtedly provide great joy, and Mozart's music is sublime; neither can give quite as much solace to the soul as a good firm bowel movement first thing in the morning.
Ultimately, our greatest happiness stems from our basest needs.
