.....Richard Popkin and Avrum Stroll, in Philosophy Made Simple, relate the story of the American philosopher Morris Raphael Cohen, who in teaching Descartes to his class had carefully explained Descartes' reasons for doubting his very existence. He then sent his students home to read the philosopher’s Meditations. The next day a worried young man, looking much the worse for wear, reported to Professor Cohen. He had been up all night studying and worrying about the assignment.
....."Professor Cohen," he said anxiously, "please tell me, do I exist?" .....Professor Cohen considered the question and then answered, "And who wants to know?" ..........— Steve Allen (1921 – 2000), American comedian, humanist, musician, actor, composer, author. .....This, now, is the judgment of our scientific age—the third reaction of man upon the universe! This universe is not hostile, nor yet is it friendly. It is simply indifferent.
..........— John H. Holmes (1879-1964), American Unitarian minister. The Sensible Man's View of Religion (1932). |

"There is a theory which states that if ever anyone discovered
exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarrely inexplicable. There is another theory which states that this has already happened." |

I can't find the exact quote, but I think one of the profoundest observations I've come across was made by the English humourist Willie Rushton (iirc).
He observed that while Shakespeare's plays undoubtedly provide great joy, and Mozart's music is sublime; neither can give quite as much solace to the soul as a good firm bowel movement first thing in the morning. Ultimately, our greatest happiness stems from our basest needs. ![]() |
