Don't Christian books contain sex and violence? The Bible is full of it!

It was not heavily edited, but it really didn't matter much. The actors are practically unintelligible. I watch all BBCA programs with closed captioning enabled so that I can know what they are mumbling so fast. Annie on Being Human is adorable, but she is as hard to follow as Rose Tyler was.

Apologies, cheerfully withdrawn.

Don't think I'll start a new thread for that either

Pulling up a PDF of Bridge to Terabitha, for instance, I found 6 "damn"s, one "hellhole" (I'm not counting mentions of the place "hell") and 5 "heck"s, which might make it unacceptable, depending on the OP's level of discomfort. (Don't think nobody is offended by words as mild as "heck"-- when my high school in South Carolina put on a play of Greece, the word "jeeze" was censored out because it was a slur of "Jesus.")

Ohyes! And westerns are fairly family-friendly. Not "I'm in love with a cowboy", but actual westerns.

And Patricia put all of the "Little House" books here in the MR library. Not new, but definitely entertaining.

The Discworld books are terrific also. The kids will like them, but the adults will get all of the wordplay that makes them so funny.

Also have swearing. I sampled from a few of the books, and every one I checked had "damn" a few places (even the Tiffany Aching ones.) That was my point in my first reply-- I (and other people not looking for them) don't even know which books have no swearing and which ones don't.

(Just did a word search in randomly-selected Night Watch-- it has 51 "damn"s and 38 "hell"s.)

Are you looking for "books suitable for children," or books that you wouldn't mind sharing with kids but are geared for adults? There are plenty of, for example, fantasy novels that aren't generally considered "family" oriented, but there's no sex or swearing in them.

What genres are you interested in? Mystery, science fiction, fantasy, historical, real-life, thrillers (hard to find those without swearing, but it might be do-able), political, horror, humor? Are you interested in Christian-themed or Muslim-themed books?

"Books w/o swearing and sex" is an awfully *big* category. And while it does take a bit of searching to find them because almost nobody markets them that way, we've got (among the crowd of us) time to do that kind of searching--but none of us wants to spend an hour poking through lists & links to put together a list of "30 tales of drama and college life" if it turns out you're mainly interested in crime stories or science fiction.

As a parent I didn't feel that sheltering my kids was the correct answer. I felt that explaining to them what they were reading and discussing it was most important.

Of course, that goes to a certain age, below that you do want to keep certain material away from them. But, once your kids get to junior high these days they are dealing with sex, relationship issues, prejudice, caste system, etc. Oh, and junior high kids do swear. They may not do it at home though.

Sorry, I brought this thread a bit off topic with the above.

Some great suggestions, A few responses.

First, I'd like some books to read to my kids but am primarily interested in books for me and my wife more than books for the kids. I just don't want to read books with swearing and sex....and I don't want graphic descriptions of violence either. I know some disagree, but I hope we can continue to stay focused on suggestions.
FWIW, they don't have to be free either. I'm willing to buy books if they are good and come highly recommended. Thanks!!

As far as genres, most anything is going to be fine. We're not big fans of sci-fi, although I hear great things about the Ender's Game series. So basically any genre but sci-fi. Thanks.

And you still haven't addressed a critical point-- what do you conciser "swearing"? There isn't some universal definition of what some people conciser to be offensive, you know. Is "damn" too far? Is "heck" okay? Those issues make a huge difference in what range of books meet your standards.

Sorry. Heck is fine. I guess I'd call them traditional obscenities that I'm opposed to such as hell, not as a location but an expletive. Same with damn. Obviously other "harsher" words. Thanks and sorry for the oversight.
