I just finished "Sudden Sea" by R.A. Scotti, which is about the Great Hurricane of 1938. I've been wanting to read it for a while and when I saw it was $2.99 in ebook I had to get it. I think the deal is still available (I saw it on Kobo/Borders and Sony), if anyone is interested.

Finished the Hunger Games trilogy (couldn't put it down), finished It Must have been Something I Ate (that guy really really really loves his food) and have started Midnight's Children which I am finding somewhat slow going. I'm not sure Rushdie's writing style is a good fit for me but I will finish it (only about 60 pages in after a couple of days which is slow for me).

Some of Rushdie's books I get through really quickly (Midnight's Children, The Ground Beneath Her Feet, The Moor's Last Sigh), others take me forever to plough through. I really couldn't tell you why. It took me months to read The Satanic Verses and Shalimar the Clown. (and I usually get through a book in a few days at the most.)

Now onto Green Mars by Kim Stanley Robinson. I read Red Mars back in June, and wasn't wonderfully impressed. I'm hoping that the next in the sequence will be better.

Reading Silesian Station by David Downing -- an Anglo-American journalist working in Berlin just before WWII breaks out moonlights as a double agent, underground railroader and would-be resistance fighter while hoping to keep his son and girlfriend safe. Lots of nice historical detail, though the story wanders a little between competing plots. Works for me though, since it's much like Alan Furst's books and I'm always up for a historical espionage noir story.

By the way, if any of you are into crime/mystery novels set during the war, Billy Boyle is free for the Kindle currently as a promo.

Happy readin',
Steve

Wow! I just finished "Thin Blood" by MR author, Vicki Tyley. I started it the other morning before I was suppose to be somewhere, and I couldn't stop reading! I had to finally put it down, so I could leave (of course, I was late). As soon as I arrived back home, I just had to finish it.

The story grabbed me from the beginning, and moved so fast, that there just never seemed a place where I could stop and put it down for later. I was kept guessing until the end of the story.

I can't wait to start her other one, "Sleight Malice".

They're snortingly good. Espionage-ish thrillers with wry humour and an otherworldly darkness that started at the edges but is gradually deepening and taking over the centre of the story. The stories stand alone but also add together into an overall arc with a planned end-point, which I find very satisfying in a series. Highly recommended for anyone who likes suspenseful urban fantasy with a Lovecraft tinge.
I finished book three and have book four ready to read (pbooks). I am really enjoying these.

Reading "Maximum Bob" by Elmore Leonard - it's a true "hoot" of a book - full of totally wildly improbable yet real characters.

Caveat: formatting in the Kindle edition needs major improvement. Chapters that alternate between characters no longer have spaces delineating/signalling the shift in viewpoint. It's somewhat disconcerting to be reading about a judge in a courtroom and then have the next paragraph describing a lap dance.

Trying hard not to visualise that vision; but I'm finding that alot in mobi books that I've been getting, it sometimes takes a sentence of two before I suddenly realise I'm a few days on, or a few miles away from where the story was. Disconcerting, and I thought it was a conversion issue with Calibre.

Just finished "Katyn: Stalin's Massacre and The Triumph of Truth" by Allen Paul.
An extremely moving book. By weaving the personal experiences of three Polish families into the narrative, Paul has transformed a standard historical chronicle into a poignant testimony to the Poles' belief in "victory in defeat". Highly recommended.

Thought I'd just take a quick look at this week's book club read, "The Killing Floor". Bad idea. Already about 1/3 through it and just spent the past 1/2 hour in a parking lot trying to finish just this chapter.

Can you say "Good Read"? I knew you could....

I'm supposed to be reading another book on Final Cut Studio, but I kind of drifted off... Started Atonement, and also Carol Berg's The Spirit Lens. She's one of my guilty reads, the kind of book we call "station novels" in France, because you buy them in train stations or airports She's a bit predictable after a while but I like her.

Long chapters... That's it....

It's good enough so far, that I'll probably be looking at further Jack Reacher/Lee Child novels.
