As others have stated my guess is the issues that can befall a K3 are similar to those of a decent mobile or a laptop. Software slowdown is usually do to RAM leakage and a reboot usually solves that. As for hammers, bricks, pavements, cars and steel toes caps - few electronic devices will survive an encounter with those so just be sensible.

Please purchase my book, "How to Destroy Your Kindle", and don't do anything I suggest.

I think it should be treated like all other electrical devices.
Try not to drop it or get it wet. Try to protect the screen by keeping it in a case and try not to let heavy items rest on the screen. |

I don't think that you can destroy your Kindle by refreshing the screen too often. Many people have used their K1s for years and screens still work.
You are most likely to damage your Kindle while on the go, so don't let it leave the house without a cover. Or it may end up scratched like this. I also had couple of Kindles fail after take-off in the airplane (I guess that pressure drop damaged something). But since then my family has done dozens of flights with several Kindles and nothing happened. Overall these cases seem quite rare. Also there seems little you can do to protect from it other than not take your Kindle to the airplane at all which kind of defeats the purpose. |

Can anyone tell me how fragile the kindle screen is? I don't think it is made of glass, but is it as fragile as glass?

My K1 is still alive and well. I could sell it like new two years after getting it for my birthday. If you take sensible precautions (no hammers, don't cook it, try and avoid sitting on it) then your K3 will last you a good long time.
I do use my Kindle near water. I have a waterproof cover from Trendy Digital for my K1. It keeps out water and sand when I am at the beach. There are other cases that are waterproof, the M-Edge Guardian, and the Klear Kase, which is water resistant and made from the material used to manufacture windshields for the F16. The Guardian and KlearKase have to be adjusted for the K3 but should be available at some point in time. |

I just use a Ziploc freezer bag when I'm at the beach, pool or in the bathtub with my Kindle. For peace of mind I did purchase the extended warranties for all my Kindles and I've used them on my K2 (sun fade problem) and my first DX (battery died). Actually my K2 was still under the original warranty. I don't usually buy extended warranties but I have for the Kindles.

Wouldn't damage from condensation inside the bag be more likely than the device taking injury from a small splash of water? |

Don't let others touch it! If they want to see it, demonstrate its feature for them, don't let them play with all the buttons. (This has not happened to me, just adding my two cents!)

The worst is when you show something expensive to a buddy, and they know you're nervous about it, they always make that fake, *woops I'm going to drop it* motion just to mess with you, and half the time that leads to the real thing happening.

They've had lawsuits over the K2 cases because of this. The K3 case may be different, I don't know.

I accidentally dropped my first one on a concrete floor and another time accidentally slung it about 20 feet across an asphalt parking lot and it survived both murder attempts with only dings and scratches to the case.
It finally died when it gently slid off my lap one day onto a linoleum floor. The second one also died when it fell off a desk recently onto a linoleum floor. My advice would be to avoid contact with linoleum and don't be a klutz. Last edited by WT Sharpe; 08-31-2010 at 06:26 PM. |
