Adobe reader convert to Sony PRS500

Hi: I have been considering purchasing an ereader for some time now. I started purchasing and downloading books about a month ago to see how I felt about reading from my laptop without pinting the actual items (books)...I ended up being fairly pleased with the results but still wanted an ereader. I purchased a Sony PRS500 yesterday and have had some problems getting the items I now own onto this device. I used pdflrf with some sucess on plain jane pdf book - thankfully - I thought I would go blind looking at the micrscopic text otherwise! However, the books I purchased and was reading on Adobe's ereader doesn't seem to convert with pdflrf...can anyone advise me? Thanks, cozworth

Many of the PDF books you purchase are DRMed, that is they have Digital Rights Management aspects that restrict what you can and cannot do with the file. These files will not convert using tools like pdflrf.

If by chance you have a purchased PDF that has no DRM (there are some, I even have a few) they can generally be transformed into an LRF. Remember that PDF is a wrapper and the contents inside may be text based, image based, or vector (Postscript) based. Text based is easy to convert through many programs including libprs500. Image based works well with pdflrf. Thankfully I have not seen a new vector based PDF in the last 8 years and all you can do is to convert it to an image based PDF (which reduces the quality) and transform that file.

I hope this helps.

Sorry, what is "Adobe eReader"? The "eReader" format has nothing to do with Adobe, as far as I'm aware. Can you clarify - are your books in eReader format, or are they DRM-protected PDF files?

The bad news is that, in general, Secure e-books (with DRM) are not transferable between reader vendors. So Adobe e-books are only readable with Adobe software, and eReader e-books (say) with eReader software. This is a very sore point with many of us, because it does not seem right that an e-book can't necessarily be read on a new device. It does not help in your case, but the DRM on a few formats can be broken and so these formats are more future-proof than the others.

The good news is that Adobe Digital Editions (e.g. on a Windows PC) should be able to read your purchased e-books, and Adobe DE is supposed to be available on at least the Sony PRS-505 eventually. There is still no commitment from Sony to make this available on the PRS-500.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but, Adobe Acrobat 8 won't read DRM laden PDF ebooks. You have to have Adobe Acrobat 7 (as the latest version that will) read these. A lot of people are upset with Adobe because they upgraded and now their books won't open.

I believe that if they download digital editions it will read those files. It replaces the version 7 functionality for ebooks as well as supported epub.
