Being a big old wuss, the last horror I watched was Evil Dead II (and that whilst under the influence and so giggled all night).
I have walked out of so many films both in the cinema and at friends - honestly cannot bear horror films but am happy to plow through all types of gory books. I put it down to the music........ |

A really scary movie was the remake of Psycho. It was scary in that someone in charge at the movie studio actually gave the green light for it to be made.

No question about it... For me, the scariest movie I ever saw was called "Quetzalcoatl."
I was about 8-9 years old and saw it in a movie theater on a military base in Germany. The story line was about the Aztec god, Quetzalcoatl, who in the movie had the body of a lion, giant wings and tail with beautiful feathers (they had to tell you they were beautiful as the movie was in B&W) and the head of a dragon. This beast was so narcissistic that if anyone kept one of its feathers, it would fly into their window at night, kill them and take back its feather. ![]() An evil Nazi scientist somehow managed to control this creature and kept it locked up in a cave. He would periodically throughout the movie pluck a feather from a wing and leave it to be found by one of the good guy scientists. Then at night he would release Quetzalcoatl who would fly out, kill the good scientist, and then for some reason I still can't figure out, fly back into its cage in the cave. ![]() I refused to pick up any feather I saw on the ground for the next 15 years. Flat out refused. ![]() Stitchawl |

I think scary movie is more funny than an ordinary comedy movie.

Lot's of great scary movies out there!
I love the original Halloween. One of my favorite movies. Sadly the more sequels they made the less scary Michael Meyers became. I don't like explanations on some things evil, it's better to not know. The fear of the unknown makes it much more creepy. Definitely The Exorcist as one of the scariest movies. I can remember on the news they were talking about people fainting and one person having a heart attack if I remember correctly. Jaws probably scared me the most as a child. No rhyme or reason for a shark to attack. It's in it's nature. I swear after I saw this movie I never went any deeper in the Ocean/Gulf further than I can see. This rule still applies today. The Darkness with Anna Paquin is a favorite. It's atmospheric and interesting plot. I love foreign filmed horror movies. Tenebrae is a great Italian horror movie. Alien, the first one, was the best sci-fi horror movie. I also did like Event Horizon too. Sci-fi and Horror a rare combination of genres that often turn out favorable results. Sadly now many movies are more about gore and blood and guts than actual plot development and characters. Let's see how many different ways we can kill someone in this flick, que the body count! ![]() |

![]() I recently saw Pandorum, and while it was not that great a movie, the final twist at the end was pretty good. |

Oops, I meant to say that do NOT turn out favorable results. I haven't seen Pandorum yet. I'll have to keep an eye out for it.

Let's face it, today's horror movies suck.
They're made for people with 5 second attention spans. With overblown FX. And a sociopath's taste for gore. Suspense is a dying art. I'ed rather read a good horror novel. |

Exactly Recluse! Hit it right on the head. This is why I enjoy a lot of older horror movies, especially obscure movies from the 60's and 70's. Even if they were cheesy. Also I find a lot of foreign horror movies still know the craft of suspense, writing a good plot and character development.

I think foreign horror movies definitely have the edge over American ones. Even something like El laberinto del fauno, which of course isn't a horror movie per se, gives you more of that fantastic clenching feeling in your stomach that you get from a properly suspenseful movie. El orfanato is another great one.

There are some very good independent horror films around, too. Just a little harder to find, but well worth it.
