So, I guess you are right and other less notables such as Steve Jobs who 've expressed this opinion are clueless. Btw, remind me again the OS the originated from and is used in Asia? Right I didn't think so. Explain to me why giants such as sony and toshiba have not developed even their own variants of other people's code, namely linux? As for ignorance talk about the pot calling the kettle black.

Japs isn't derogatory as say the n word would be, japs is just colloquial. Again, you are ignorant and you accuse others of being so, as per wiki: "In Singapore[9] and Hong Kong,[10] the term is used freely as a contraction of the adjective "Japanese" rather than as a derogatory term. The Australian news service Asia Pulse also uses the term."

Boy, you lashed out on what I said out of the (orca) blue and you embarrassed yourself.

To be fair, he could be from a part of the world where the word isn't considered to be a slur

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jap

But yeah, that word screamed out to me in 30-point blinking red letters when I saw it, too.

Edit-- seeing the post he wrote while I was replying, I take that back-- he's a racist.

Linux was not developed by an American. It was developed by a Finnish. Blatant glueless of the fact that what I say. Please, grow up. We lived in a global economy and globalized world. Don't go around and act as if the U.S. has the best of everything. I can list many things that many other countries are better than the U.S.

thank you very much too Yokai tree. Of course in your code of politeness it doesn't cross you mind that accusing someone with offensive epithets such as "racist" in a baseless way is to say the least rude. Of course it's also colossally presumptuous.

Btw, where in my later post am I racist, in saying that Sony hasn't developed a linux variant. Ridiculous.

Wt are you talking about man? Take that chip off your shoulder and go out for a walk to chill. Where did I declare american supremacy? I am not even from the U.S.

I am well aware of who developed unix, and who developed linux, I just stated a well known fact (something someone no lesser than Steve Jobs proclaimed) about asian's and their software development prowess as opposed to their hardware development prowess (which is seldomly surpassed elsewhere in the world). And all that in the context that sony has failed to capitalize with any decent software on their hardware and manufacturing superiority, and hence the inferior devices.

What is all that garbage about global economies, and racism and all that crap? What's wrong with you?

The question springs: will Mobileread buy Kovid Goyal each one of the new models so that he can work with them? I recall they did that for PRS-505 and it surprised me.

I'm not calling you a racist because of what you say about Linux and you know it. I'm calling you a racist because you use a racial slur. The first time you used it may have been a mistake, out of ignorance. If so, the proper response to when you have used a term that you did not know was considered to be a racial slur would have been to say "I'm sorry, I didn't realize that was offensive, I won't do it again", not to try to defend the phrase as "not as bad as the "n word." And I'll backtrack a bit-- that response doesn't necessarily make you a racist-- but it does cast a very poor image on you.

I'm not Japanese or even Asian, but I would no more call someone from Japan a "Jap" than I would call someone from China a "Chink" or Vietnam a "Gook"-- and I hope that you wouldn't, either. All three terms were used during their respective wars as slurs to dehumanize the enemy, just as "the n-word" is used as a dehumanizing slur. (I have no idea how Germans feel about being called "Jerries.")

No I didn't make a mistake when I used it the first time around, I used it in another sense than the general parlance in U.S. would have it, but one that is acceptable in Hong Kong, Singapore and Australia, and in Europe where I am from. As I would have said the yanks, I said the japs. Nothing wrong with that.

You have conveniently failed to respond to any of the content of what I said, which was technological, and was in many respects in praise of the Japanese. You were instead taken over by some hypocritical racial hysteria for nothing. Too much political correctness can do that. There are a trillionth cruelties and injustices in this world to which most of you from the pc police turn a cold blind eye towards, but as soon as someone crosses some supposed hypothetical (and hypocritical) imagined line you go into hysterics. So what if I said japs, the content wasn't at all hostile to the point of even praising their achievements, and I would have said yanks anyday too. And save me your judgment about my poor image, I didn't ask for it, and I am glad if the likes of you consider my image poor.

In any case, apologies to the other members, I 'll stop here, I made a generally accepted tec point that Asians are not big on software and that consistently undermines their tec efforts despite their superior hardware. And that of course applies to sony too here.

Just sayin...

I love my PRS 300. If the 350 does not have the touchscreen glare, I will gift my 300 to my brother and pick one up.

I just wish they could come up with a 9.7" or so reader, that would make a compelling buy. They should also drop touch screens since they degrade the quality of the reading experience. I really hope they have thought about all that are ready for some pretty good products, instead of just throwing a couple of half baked updates.

Hey, now I don't feel so bad about the Blu-ray tangent! And in danger of going at it again, in your avatar picture you're holding the most unusual looking e-Reader I've ever seen!

One thing not mentioned is the need for speed in Readers. Try using a very long book -- like a Bible -- and it still even drags down the PRS-600. I can still find a chapter/verse faster in a paper Bible than the NIV e-Reader edition, even with the latter having a TOC immediately handy on the PRS-600.

Living in Australia I'd just like to point out that the word "Japs" *is* considered a racial slur here. Get your facts right. Moreover, the use of the word "Jap" objectifies the individual in question, and for that alone is considered offensive. But realistically, it does not matter if you understand *why* it is offensive (because evidently you don't), you simply must understand that many people *do* find it offensive when you speak that way.

But back on topic, if the PRS-650 has the touch screen with no degradation of screen quality it'd probably be a pretty darn good note-taker as well as an ebook reader. Might it be time to upgrade from my venerable PRS-505?

Living in Europe (Germany / Spain) and being a european with 2 european nationalities (French / British), I confirm "Jap" is offensive in those 4 countries, and for sure in many other european countries.

And to be on topic too, I just hope the new sonys will be quicker booting and uploading metadata than the 600.....
