K3 battery life stinks... what?

So I fully charged the battery last night. Had the kindle plugged into the computer and fully charged it right before bed. Spent 15 minutes reading it with the lighted cover... and then woke up this morning with 25% of the battery left.

Is this to be expected for a new battery that needs to be conditioned, or do I have a bum unit somehow?

Have you loaded a lot of content onto it? If you have, it'll be busy indexing it in the background, and that can certainly use a significant amount of battery power.

What do you mean by indexing? I plan to loads 100's of stories on mine (once get it). Should I be doing a few just a few a day? I plan to sort them into collections of my own.

When you load a new book onto the Kindle, a background task indexes the book so that it can be rapidly searched. This only happens once for each book, but it does take quite a long time to do. It's not something you actually notice, other than by the fact that the Kindle uses battery power while it's doing it.

Just leave it plugged in when you do tbat. Anytime you load a new book the Kindle sorts tbrough it to make searches easier. This can really drain the battery if you load several hundred books at once.

And Kindle tends to crash more readily when it is doing this. At least I hope that's why mine is!

Thank you, I'll remember that when I load my books

Lighted cover has heavy drain

Watch your use of the lighted cover. It has more drain than the Kindle, itself.

Thus, I only have a plain cover for my Kindle 3.

I loaded a bunch of books and a few hundred articles and papers, so indexing is most likely the culprit. Thanks guys.

I noticed the same thing with my K3 since I had added ~250 books in one go. It went from a full charge to 1/4 in an afternoon, I added another 300 books then left it on the charger overnight. Now it's back to full charge and finished indexing so now hopefully we can get a real test of battery length.

You can see if it is done indexing by doing a search for some random item, like "RRRRRR". It will come up with the search screen and an item showing how many items are still remaining to be indexed.

I've been playing with my Kindle loads since getting it, mainly in order to make the vids people have requested. I only have about 40 books on my Kindle & I keep my wireless switched off unless I really need it on - my battery is showing as being about 4/5 full still.

Also - if you leave Whispernet on after downloading a lot of books - the battery drain is truly impressive - so remember to turn it off once all books are loaded - and leave the Kindle plugged in overnight to let the indexing finish.

I haven't gotten my K3 yet. But when I got my K2 I dropped 400+ books on it all at once and that brought it to it's knees. Lockups while reading and the battery was draining quickly. Indexing turned out to be the issue, when I loaded things in smaller chunks I had no problems and haven't had any since.

ONLY when you complete a few complete discharge-charge cycles will the battery pack achieve maximum longevity/capacity. And since no one here has had their Kindle3 units long enough for that to occur ... well ... No "battery condition" reports this week are really of any value.
