I have medium quality LCD, 7". I have a high quality e-ink, 5". I read fiction. I read more than 2 hours at a time. And I don't see any difference. Unless I'm reading in the livingroom, then I'll have more eye strain from my e-ink and none from my LCD.

Didn't come up with a single thread.
If you search for "is better LCD or eInk" you get 20 pages of results, if you searcf for "LCD vs eInk" you find even more, and also, this:

https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...highlight=eInk

is the thread that I remember more often.

Finally, if you look for the dreaded word "eyestrain", you find a ton of threads about it.

Almost no thread actually starts as a "eInk vs LCD" thread, but they turn into it as soon as someone writes "I can't stand the black-and-white flashing when turning pages on eInk" or "I don't understand how people still read on LCD, eInk is much easier on the eyes".

Your mistake perhaps is that you only read the thread titles, and found no "which is better"-like title. Don't let titles guide you, though, because this kind of conversations usually starts halfway through a topic which started as something completely unrelated, and then degenerate into flamewars.

Didn't come up with a single thread.

I know it has been discussed in other threads, but if you're going to accuse it of being a dead horse, you should be ready to post the supposedly identical thread.

Besides, all you had to do was click twice: once to make your selection, once to submit. No typing necessary, Talldog and donnegeddan.

I notice that 93% of the people have not had a problem with this simple request for a vote.

Thanks for putting forth the heroic effort to participate in the poll.
Chill out, I did participate in your poll (e-ink is easier on my eyes). I was trying to make a light-hearted point that these kinds of discussions never stop. Guess I should have used a smiley.

What is funny to me is that people who are "tired of beating the dead horse" feel the need to whine about it. If you're tired of it, why did you even open the thread? = illogical.

Unless the purpose was to use the dead horse graphic. That is a good reason; pretty entertaining. Looking back, I see that JSWolf has been here 4 years and has nearly 20,000 posts. I would venture to guess that most topics in the general forum here are 'dead horses to him'. How about some patience for the relative noobs such as myself?

On the other hand, Sweetpea has nearly 19,000 posts, but did not rip into me. (thanks Sweetpea)

For me, this is pretty much a dead horse but didn't comment on that since it still is a hot topic for others. I voted Still too many variables primarily because ambient light was not included as a standard and, at least to me, that makes a huge difference. Also, no distinction was made between relective LCDs and backlit ones. And, among backlit LCDs, some may have the brightness adjustable and others may not, another variable that can have a huge impact. Yet another problem is the standards put forth are rarely what happens in reality. Trying to compare LCDs to e-ink screens is very subjective due to differences in users, devices and viewing conditions. Each person has to make their own decisions as to what works best for them.

My idea of an ideal reader display would be either a high contrast e-ink screen with a variable backlight and long battery life or a reflective LCD with the same specifications: high contrast with a variable backlight and long battery life. Until then, I will have to settle for the best compromise of comfortable viewing, durability, ease of use, battery life, firmware, format compatability, price, etc., for me and my needs.

Unfortunately you're never going to see a backlit eInk screen for the simple reason that eInk screens are opaque, hence cannot be illuminated from behind.

Sony tried producing a side-lit eInk reader, the PRS-700. It was very unpopular, because the air gap introducted by the lighting elements between the eInk display and the outer plastic screen resulted in a "blurry" display. It wasn't on the market for very long before Sony stopped making it, and they abandoned the lighting with its successors.

It'll be interesting to see how successful Amazon are with the Kindle 3, which has the option of a cover with an integrated "pull out" LCD light to front-illuminate the screen.

JeremyZ, for some reason your logic fascinates me. (perhaps that is what makes me an "outlier")

But, really how did you come up with the " 93% of the people have not had a problem with this simple request for a vote" statistic?

Intriguing.

At the time, 93% of the people voted for one of the first 3 options.
