pboss,
not sure how to answer your question because i'm not good at figuring out the whole 'cool light' and warm light' stuff. There are some distinctions i'm not good at making. It's a veyr whiteish LED. Didn't really get any feeling of being warm and cozy from it.

*******************************************

Charleski,

It's hard to see the difference well in the videos because there isn't really a correct focus point - just couldn't find it.

In the photos I think the photo that's added is pretty clear.

However, Anarel is right - you have to see it in person.

Once you see the two side by side, and if you have the option to read on either, you'll never choose K2 over K3.

************************************************

kjk, K3 does indeed completely destroy the K2US.

*****************************

The K2 US used in photos is from the first month the Kindle 2 was available and the K2 INternational is perhaps from November - around that time.
There's a significant difference between the two - think they started using a new screen or some hugely improved algorithm.

I'm interested in the contrast difference between the Nook and the K3. It's hard to tell from the pictures but the text indicates that there's not a huge difference.

difference in contrasts

there's not really a huge difference.

Have put up a post with kindle 3 and nook photos - http://ireaderreview.com/kindle-3-la...s-nook-photos/

Also here's a post that has a list of all categories of photos - http://ireaderreview.com/2010/08/25/...hoto-overload/

The latter includes links to

kindle 3 vs sony, nook, othe ereaders.
the new lighted cover, etc.

The Nook was around 15% better than Kindle 2 plus had the black border around the screen.

So Kindle 3 might be 40% to 50% better than Kindle 2 International. However, for Nook the difference is smaller and the blakc border means Kindle 3's Graphite casing doesn't have as much of an impact.

The screen is clearly better - however, the difference isn't as big.

Hmmm. . .

I'll add that to the list of possible reasons for canceling my K3 order before it ships.

Why not wait and see it for yourself. You can still take advantage of the 30 day return policy.

I just saw the kindle 3 vs nook photos. Thanks for posting them.

The screen difference isnt as great as I expected. Not sure if the expense of using Pearl screen would be justified for B&N. Or for consumers either.

Were those taken under the same conditions?

In any case, I suspect that the 50% thing is based on comparing some technical measurements in a somewhat suspect way.

I probably will end up doing that. I just put a novel on the Nook for my wife to read. If I can get her interested her own e-reader I can justify keeping both!

I think anyone buying a first ereader right now should have the K3 (and any other Pearl-screen readers trhat come out in the next few months) as their no.1 choice. But for those looking to upgrade it's a very different proposition.

If the screen were markedly better than my PRS-505 I'd have got a K3 for my personal use, despite the hassle of having to convert to its clunky mobi format - screen quality trumps everything else. But so far the benefits in contrast compared to a good Vizplex screen seem a lot less convincing. Faster page turns, better highlighting and annotation are all very nice, but are the sort of thing I'll happily wait out for a couple of generations.

I just popped my K2I and my K3 onto my flatbed scanner to show a comparison of mine. The images on the computer don't even look nearly as good as with plain eyesight.

Image with only rotation 90 degrees and cropped (no other adjustments):

Left image with white border is the Kindle 2 International. Right image with black border around screen is the Kindle 3.

The K3 screen is as good as the DXG screen (I have both) and both of those are significantly better (to my eyes) than the K2US, K1, Sony 505, and Sony Touch which I currently own. You would need really good photography or video to see the difference.

Wow, thanks. That was really helpful. I am so glad I decided to go with the K3. And my husband, who got the K2, won't know the difference.
