It is one of those things that will eventually just be known.

Just like LCD monitors replaced CRTs. I'm not sure it was ever proven, but enough people preferred LCD that CRTs went bye-bye.

For reading text, it will go the same way. (editing may still favor LCDs)

I think that kjk suggested you to make a forum search before because such polls have already been done, and I think there are many. Maybe too many. The LCD vs eInk debate is a dead horse now.

As for LCD vs CRT, as far as I know (which is little) CRT went bye bye because:
a) LCD consumes less electricity
b) LCD can have brigther colours
c) LCD has a higher refresh rate and progressive scan
d) an LCD screen produces less heat

Also, European laws (I don't know about the rest of the world, though) are pushing companies to produce devices who consume less energy and less waste. That's why LCD is being (very slowly, to tell the truth) abandoned too, in favour of LED, OLED and AMOLED screens.

Yes.

One thing I did kinda miss though? Multisync CRTs. It wasn't easy getting used to fixed resolution desktop displays.

Huh!
My LCD supports 3 frame rates and 5 resolutions (true, "native" resolution is usually best).

You've forgotten the most important benefit - for me, at least - and that's the shear amount of space that CRTs use. I bought a Dell 19" CRT many years ago. The thing was literally four feet deep, and I couldn't pick it up on my own. Now I have a 25" LCD screen on my desk which is 1 inch deep.

Sure..but multisync CRTs had true multiple native resolutions-all those interpolated LCD ones are pretty inferior.

The real need for multiple resolutions has diminished, for me-mostly games demanded it (which I don't really play anymore).

Refresh rates are pretty irrelevent for LCD displays, because they maintain a constant light output throughout the refresh cycle, unlike CRT displays which "flicker" as the phosphor coating on the tube is constantly refreshed and the light decays away.

I definitely wouldn't say it's the same, and thank goodness it's not--I'm able to read for longer periods more comfortably on a hand-held LCD device than an eInk one.

In what way do you think those of us favoring LCD screens are reading??

lol...we still have one of those gigantic old Sony WEGA CRT-TVs...one reason we haven't gotten rid of it is that it is so damn heavy .

I honestly do not believe that. Sorry.

In that way precisely. There are various types of reading, and i don't consider reading blogs, newspapers, magazines or comics, the same type of reading as reading real books. I believe most of the reading done in LCD screens include the former while the later are preferred for replacing book reading.

Are you unwilling to countenance the suggestion that this might be a matter of personal preference? I've been reading eBooks on LCD screens for 20 odd years, and on EPD screens for 5 years or so. I find that each has its pros and cons. I far prefer reading LCD screens, such as my iPad, in bed (with the backlight set very low), but for reading while sitting in a chair in good light I use EPD devices. It really doesn't have to be an "either/or" thing. Both display technologies have their strengths and weaknesses.

There are outliers everywhere.... so i can uphold your suggestion, but i still think it is a outlier...

I do read a lot of blogs, forums and articles online. But I've also read 41 full-length novels on my iPad since I got it. Over the years I've also read books on my iPhone, an iPod Touch, and various Palm devices. AND I've owned a Kindle. I prefer LCD.

My husband reads books on his iPhone, and before that a Treo. He checked out my Kindle. He decided he was happy with his iPhone.

It's great that you're happy with eInk. A lot of people are. But it's not the One Technology To Rule Them All. Stop trying to invalidate other peoples' experiences. "I honestly do not believe that. Sorry." Thanks so much!

I read dozens of books on my Sony PRS-505 and I loved the way the text looked on the screen. I thought, "well, this will be much better on my eyes." Now that I've had my iPad, I've read several books, including reading for many hours straight, and I haven't felt any eye strain problems. There are many who prefer eink, but I think once actual scientific data is collected, the amount of difference in eye strain between the two types of devices will be relatively small.

<applause>

The notion that eink screens are the only acceptable solution is folly.
