It takes forever to run (sometimes up to several weeks) but might rescue your disc.

If it's a mechanical error you're probably out of luck:

if a hard drive's circuit board, drive motors or other mechanical parts are defective, or there is systemic file system corruption, SpinRite may be of little or no help[3]. In fact, in such circumstances no purely software-based solution would be sufficient to overcome the problem

That may have been helpful this morning when I actuall posted my first panic attack using a computer running with that drive. But now it won't spin. Dead as a meat axe was the last diagnosis. I keep asking for them to take it out of its little box and put it in one that does spin. But we don't know how to do that. maybe if I tell the cops there is evidence of kiddy porn on it, they will recover it for me, then i can say i was mistaken, but thanks for rescuing my data
