That's why I drink mostly herbal infusions - mint, rooibos, hibiscus/rosehip. Rooibos is great because it's so tea-like, with a full rich taste, but without the caffeine.

It made me wonder if it shouldn't be a name for anti-oxidants? But I don't know any japanese....

Catechin is an antioxydant, yes. No doubt there are others with equally exciting names and stories

From this follows logically that it will also be beneficial for Homo sapiens.

Today I felt like having a simple potato knish.

The first time that I had one was in New York City. Simple - potato filling, onion, garlic, and fried. Put a little mustard on it, and eat.

But it's one of those things that can range from bland to absolutely terrible if not done eight (even in NYC). Short of going to NYC and hoping to find a good potato knish, I have to make my own.

And that started me on the path of good food/bad food. By that I don't mean what's good for you. But how luck may effect you choice of food.

When I was about 9 I had my first experience with lasagna. It was so bad that I didn't try it again for 15 years. Truth. Now it's one of my favorite foods to make.

My first experience with Chinese food was the same way. Bad the first time, and VERY good many years later.

Mid Eastern food, especially Lebanese Kofta, incredibly good back in the '70s. And that was the last time it was good. Whenever I try it again the best I get is bland.

But after the lasagna experience I've learned to try something a few times, and at different places, to see if I do or don't like it.

I know what you mean. Sometimes a single bad experience with food can spoil good food for a long time. I grew up with boiled un-seasoned vegetables with every dinner. Probably healthy, but very boring. I've only in recent years found out that both kohlrabi and jerusalem artichoke are actually very nice, given the right methods of preparation (i.e. not peeled and boiled).

An example of the opposite (or it has now gone almost full circle):
When I was a child I liked blood sausage a good deal (fried and served with apple sauce and cinnamon-sugar). Then as I grew up I got a little squeamish about it - you know, eating blood. But then I realised how silly I was being and told myself to get over it. And I did
(I'll still not eat a huge portion though - too sweet)

Pre-prepared frozen lasagna from grocery stores tastes like crap, but the lasagna my wife makes is another story. It is mouth-watering delicious.
