"Repaired" because it is a brand new, fully clothed in plastic, all pieces included, never been opened before, unit. I suspect this might be because, in addition to the broken screen, 3/4 of the paint had also peeled. Since the inside of the Cover is gray instead of the light tan of my previous one, I am sure this is the new cover that no longer peels the paint.

Got it on charge til morning and will throw in my SD card, load up books I have purchased while waiting (like the 300+ I got free in the Holiday Package, and numerous other unread purchases and downloads aren't enuff), check the FW, and start reading. Shoot, I will even be able to read the two library books I had borrowed before I left on my vacation during which the screen broke the second day.

One-week turn-around from support after all the disappointing stories we have heard, I can only but credit to Jenifer's attention. (Sent in Monday, back on Saturday).

I am probably more excited than I was when originally I got it for Christmas. For one thing, it is just in time to go on vacation, whereas it was just new at Christmas time.
I'm glad to hear you got it back, and a new one, to boot! That is very encouraging, that Astak's customer service still seems to be top notch. Thanks for sharing!

New, replacement, PPro

Got back from 6 days vacation and am quite pleased with my new, replacement PPro. Might be my imagination, but it appears that the contrast is better, and the bar across the bottom (battery, clock, "Keyboard locked, etc") is a bit bigger, and I am more readily able to read them. The bar for "bookmark added successfully" appears the same size as the old one.

Like I said, might be my imagination, but it all sure caught my attention.

FW = V2.02ASTAK 100906, which seems to be the same date as the Bilbo Buggins FW in another thread, except that is V201----.

And my battery is still on two bars after 6 days of vacation reading (which is always more intense than home reading), and that's after only the first, initial charge.

I'm still happy.

Interesting...I'd like to know more about this version of the firmware. Does it run Coolreader 3? Obviously no battery drain. TTS available? I'm assuming the date represents 9th June 2010??

I'm curious too. That FW was not published on the EZ Read site. Is it available, or is it still in trials? Because it is not one I've documented in the Sticky.

oops. didn't proofread my typing. it is V2.02ASTAK 100706, making it July 6, 2010. As far as Coolreader, I haven't put an .fb2 on the end of any files to see what would happen.

Will do later, but heading out the door. be back soon.

AJ
Robert mentioned in the past an issue between Astak and the factory with firmware update requests. Given around 6-8 weeks since the date of that firmware I wonder in Astak are no longer going to post firmware updates, instead only release it on new devices??

Jenifer, are Astak still going to release firmware updates when they are available??

I just checked ez reader's website, and they have firmware listed from April. I thought that one had been removed, but maybe they put it back up... http://theezreader.com/html/support_firmware.asp Astak also has April firmware up on their website. While I was there I noticed the EZ Reader Plus is $169, and the Pocket Pro is $149. If they announced the sale price here on the forums, I must have missed it. In any case, I'm glad they're bringing the prices down to offer some competition to the big guys!

HTML, TXT and FB2 parser versions V2.00.100304, so I assume it is whatever was in the March/April FW. Not sure how to tell what version of CoolReader it might be.

Attempted to do TTS, but since I never use it, not sure exactly what I was doing. I dropped some Guttenberg .txt files onto my SD card, and after opening one, there was no "English Speaking" option. Perhaps it needs to be some other file type?

However, I did find that "XPDF" has nothing to do with TTS, lol. Took me a while, and a search of the forum, to find that XPDF doesn't work with pdf (DRM), and to also find the instructions to open the PPro manual.pdf to clear it.

Not to stir the pot, but it occurred to me that upcoming FW updates were one of the things Robert kept us aware of. Of course, if Solicitous is correct in his assumption that Astak will no longer be issuing FW updates due to Astak/factory issues, then there would be nothing for Robert to tell us. Perhaps the factory "has recently required a break for health reasons", as well.

Naw. you don't have to laugh. My wife is always telling me that if I were half as funny as I think I am, I'd be twice as funny as I actually am.

I just asked about new firmware, and so far we have no current plans for updates. However, it doesn't mean firmware isn't in the works, we just don't have a release date.

Jenifer, could you clear up the confusion. According to eGeezer his firmware is "V2.02ASTAK 100706, making it July 6, 2010", however, the latest firmware posted on EZRead site is April 2010.

In case you have followed us for the past year, I have created a message that was made as a Sticky, that has all of the Firmware version numbers and dates. I maintain it as new FW comes out. Thus I'm interested if a new version is out there that has not been announced.

This morning I re-downloaded the FW listed for the PP and it is still the April version. Thus, my confusion.

Please clear this up.

Thanks, AJ Starr

The FW update eGeezer uses is no longer available on the site (Version 100706), likely taken down because it had some technical issues.

Our tech team recommends the firmware update dated 12/10 for the PP. His email to me about this said:

"If they use more FB2 and RTF files, The '4/2/2010' on heezreader.com will be a good choice because it uses built in Coolreader to read these files.
http://www.theezreader.com/html/support_firmware.asp

If they use general files like PDF, EPUB, or TXT, the '12/10/200' will be the most stable one that I have used so far.
http://www.astak.com/downloadcenter.asp"

Hope that helps!

That's all well and good, I guess, except no one ever remembers an update ever posted in July that was then taken down. The last update posted on the Astak site was in April, and its still there.

The "update eGeezer uses", he is only using because it was sent to him on the brand new PPro which replaced his broken one. It is not a choice I made, only posted about it because I had never seen the FW Ver 100706 before (except for Buggins' version) and wanted to know if anyone knew anything about it.

Just FYI.

Thanks for the quick reply.

Actually I have been using the April 2010 FW since it was posted. I don't normally use Coolreader, but I do love it's features. Since I don't use Coolreader extensively I can't comment on the power usage of it.

My primary concern with this thread was to make sure I posted the available FW in my sticky post. But, I never did see the posting, though I admit I usually only checked it when Robert gave us the head's up that one was posted. So I could have missed it totally.

I do want to keep my sticky updated so, please, let us know when a FW is posted.

Thanks.
