B&N up for sale question
The other day I was browsing for new books and found out that Sherrilyn Kenyon's new book "No Mercy" is coming out soon. So I searched for it at B&n.com and only found the hard cover for sale. I went to her website and it said it will be available in ebook format. I went over to amazon's site and saw that they have it up for pre order kindle edition.I contacted Macmillan and they emailed me saying that since barnes was up for sale they are hesitant to release ebooks for the time being to them.Do you guys think more publishers are going to do the same?If I Buy the kindle edition do I use the kindle edition for pc? What is a good program to strip the drm and a converter so I can put it on my nook.I can't buy the book because the barnes store is over 70 miles from where I live and the Nook is one of the best things I got.

That seems to be a foolish decision on the publisher's part, but they've made a lot of dumb moves with respect to ebooks. It would cost them very little to allow B&N to sell the ebook and they would certainly sell quite a few regardless of B&N's possible future sale.
At any rate, I suspect even if B&N won't carry the ebook, other vendors like the Sony Ebook Store, Fictionwise, Books on Board, Kobo, etc. will, and they will likely be in epub format, compatible with the Nook. Often these don't show up on the sites until the day they're actually for sale, so check back on the release date. |

I just had the same problem last night. I went to buy Return to Paradise at B&N but it was only available in hardcover. I went to amazon and they had it. Pretty stupid for publishers to do that. They would still be selling copies of their ebooks via B&N, and hence making more $ from those that don't know how to strip the drm.
Lindca, I thought most of those places had their own drm? So they do not? I can buy a book from one of them and add it right to my Nook? |

Yes, the Nook does support non-B&N type Adobe DRM (epub and pdf). This is one of the advantages of the Nook and other devices that read epub over the Kindle: You're not limited to one vendor. (We won't talk about DRM removal here. ;-)) Simply use Adobe Digital Editions to transfer to your reader. |

That's a pretty ludicrous excuse for a publisher. I hope someone at B&N headquarters is investigating because seriously, we're not going out of business. This potential "sale" is a battle between the Riggios who own majority in the company and Burkle, who owns a good chunk. It's sad to see publishers aren't bothering to find out what is happening and instead just not providing titles.
Ok, I was going to keep ranting, but that's not the point. Hopefully when Macmillan realized that we haven't gone out of business when the book comes out they'll release it. :P |

I saw the author at a convention and told her my situation and gave her a signed petition with 300 signatures that I got and she told me that she will make a call to Macmillan. It worked. It is now for pre order on barnes website for the nook.

It's interesting that your direct contact with the author potentially allowed for such availability.

Good job on your successful mission.
Macmillan also doesnt allow public library lending for their ebooks. The company has peculiar issues. |

I just hope they realized their mistake. Sherrilyn Kenyon kind of looked angry for the fact
that it wasn't for the nook also. She was told it was going to be for all ereaders. |

Actually, this type of thing seems to be fairly common between publishers and authors. I contacted Sharyn McCrumb about a year ago, to ask her if she knew anything about her Elizabeth MacPherson series becoming available in ebook formats. She wrote back, in all sincerity, that they were already available. It took me sending her links of my searches at Amazon, BN, Books on Board, Diesel, etc. and so forth to convince her that the books were indeed NOT available. She then told me that she had sold the ebook rights to those to a publisher several months previously, and had just assumed the publisher had made them available. They're STILL not all available, by the way. Heaven only knows if whatever publisher she sold them to has any intentions of making them available. I think they just buy the rights to keep them tied up so no one else can get them.
