China Mieville, in an interview with the Guardian, recommended Dambudzo Marchera as one of his all-time favourite writers. I liked the sound of it, and immediately purchased "The House of Hunger", and read it on the train into and back from Paris this afternoon. It's one of the most astounding books I've read in a while.

I just finished reading "The Hunger Games". It was really good, and kept me interested all the way through. I'm looking forward to reading the next two books, once I'm done reading "Stranger in a Strange Land".

I just finished with Cronin's The Passage. I must say I'm annoyed with the ending and the fact that the second part is scheduled for 2012.
Just transferred Ann Radcliffe's The Castle's of Athlin and Dunbayne on my reader. I read four of her other novels a couple of years ago and decided to read all of them in order. Tomorrow I'm going to an amusement park and since I'm way to paranoid to even consider taking my reader on the rides, for on the train I bought a pbook of Jurassic Park. |

I personally thought the two immediate sequels were good but kind of went downhill from there.

Starting on "The Influence of Cooperative Bacteria on Animal Host Biology" in my spare time, such as it is...I got it from the library because it was too expensive to buy either used or new and no Kindle edition

Just finished "The Tower, the Zoo, and the Tortoise" by Julia Stuart. I loved it - but am unsure how to describe it. It's about the Beefeaters that live in the Tower of London complex. It's a serio-comic romp about love, loss, death, and accepting who you are. And it has some of the most memorable British characters (stereotypes and zany types) - both animal and human - that you can imagine. It has tragedy and slap-stick comedy, and some of the best one-liners I've read recently. [For example, (this is from memory) when the keeper reports the Komodo dragon is looking unusually well fed, the royal overseer responds "As long as it hasn't eaten any small children we have nothing to worry about."] Penguins are lost in transit. Pigs are kidnapped. Monopoly games are re-instated in the pub.
If you are a fan of P.G. Wodehouse, or similar authors, you're going to love this one! Wow! I devoured it in one day! |
