Thanks guys! I like Phalaenopsis orchids because the flowers are gorgeous and last for so long - and they are even quite easy to care for.

back to the garden; the potatoes looked healthy and produced plenty of greenery on the top of the soil, me thinks they were a little lazy beneath !!! So far from half the crop, a poorish show (perhaps I ought to have watered them more !!!!

We have a new resident on the deck - she's spun a vertical web from the eaves to one of the surviving geraniums.

I've named her Charlotte!

She's about 1 cm in body size - love those zebra striped legs!

Will try to identify her today. Anybody recognize her?

Looks like some spiders we have in our area that come out at night, but I don't know what they're called. As a child, I was afraid of them for years after seeing an aunt's terrified reaction to one.

Cool! I just call them "garden spiders," or "writing spiders," but when I was a little girl I remember hearing that if you ever go out in the morning and see that one of them has written your name in her web, you will die.

I love them now, though. We saw a big gathering of them near the recycling center at Jekyll Island this year. I'll attach a pic, but I'm not sure how well the spiders will show up. There were so many in one place!

OMG - I magnified your photo - and my skin is still crawling! Yikes!

We too call them garden spiders or fall spiders - they seem to appear in late August through September. I don't get close enough to read the web!

I had to go back and edit this to read "recycling center" instead of "dump." I wouldn't want anybody who might be planning to visit Jekyll Island, a jewel along Georgia's coast, to think it has a spider infested dump. It does not. It does, however, have a spider infested recycling center.
