Engadget examines 505 screen
We caught up with Russ Wilcox, CEO of E Ink, who helped shed some light on the benefits of the 505's new display chemistry, called E Ink Vizplex.

I saw that earlier. I think Engadget may have put words into Russ Wilcox's mouth with respect to greyscales. Yes, Sony moved from 4 to 8 greyscales -- but don't the new panels support 16 greyscales?

What I'm saying is that the panels support 16 greyscales. But Sony is limited to 8 by their controller.

Here's something interesting. I had totally different sample excerpts than the one shown on the Engadget photo. I wonder if each reader gets a random set, or if they have a handful of different sets they use.

I don't think they did, really -- Philips/iRex has a license to make the stuff itself, which it does in its plant in the Philippines, and they "pushed ahead" and made the 16 level stuff on their own, before e-ink came out with Vizplex. So it's more of a parallel path sort of thing.

The iLiad screen is definitely a lot better than that of the original Sony Reader. I've not had a chance to look at a VizPlex screen in person yet, but I rather suspect that the current iLiad screen is on a par with it.

I haven't seen them side by side either, but I think I remember someone commenting that the 505 and iLiad screens were really, really close, just the Vizplex being slightly "whiter" is all.
