Hi,

I'm new to Sigal and epub. I'm trying to convert my book to epub format for the apple store. They say Apple insists it must pass epubcheck before publishing. Although every program reads the epub file OK, epubcheck gives me hundreds of errors. I get similar problems with Calibre. I am using a Word file, and save as a filtered Wep page for inputs.

It seems that most of my errors involve my Table of Contents in Word 2007. I am using 1.1, 1.1.1, 1.1.1.1 type chapters in my doc.

For example, the TOC entry by Sigil is:

3.2       &nbs p; The Co-Creation of a Woman with Adam in Genesis 2:4-7. 27

The actual chapter start within the book is marked:

    3.2 The Co-Creation of a Woman with Adam in Genesis 2:4-7

To me the multiple names (5) looks wrong. Only one (2nd) matches the TOC. Calibre did similar. I suspect something buggy with Word. The epub check flagged all the names as errors. The chapter title was on line 2644.

ERROR: TCFL_1st_ed_v021_epub11_sigil.epub/OEBPS/Text/The Case for Lilith_1st_ed_v021_epub11.htm(2644): attribute "name" not allowed at this point; ignored
ERROR: TCFL_1st_ed_v021_epub11_sigil.epub/OEBPS/Text/The Case for Lilith_1st_ed_v021_epub11.htm(2644): attribute "name" not allowed at this point; ignored
ERROR: TCFL_1st_ed_v021_epub11_sigil.epub/OEBPS/Text/The Case for Lilith_1st_ed_v021_epub11.htm(2644): attribute "name" not allowed at this point; ignored
ERROR: TCFL_1st_ed_v021_epub11_sigil.epub/OEBPS/Text/The Case for Lilith_1st_ed_v021_epub11.htm(2644): attribute "name" not allowed at this point; ignored

All the names were flagged as errors. But when I remove all the names, the TOC gets broken. Should I remove all the names but 1? Should I remove table of contents and start all over somehow. Again, every reads fine in Sigil and in the Sigil TOC editor.

Change all the

name="

instances to

id="

And yes, the multiple names are unnecessary. Word doesn't produce nice html.

Thanks for the info.

I noticed a bug in Sigil's code line numbering. Sigil's code line number did not match what was reported by epubcheck or Windows Explorer when I used the webpage code viewer. I noticed the first instant where the lines got out of sync. It happened at least once more. It involved the line with "/**/". Sigil did not print that line, but instead printed two blank lines.

In Sigil (first 14 lines):

The Case for Lilith

<!--
/* Font Definitions */

In Explorer Page View (1st 14 lines):

I was getting "name" errors also on end notes and footnotes. So I changed it to "id" there also. That seemed to clear them up.

Two more massive errors by epubcheck. I have a lot of graphics inserted in the doc. For most (or all) I get width and border errors like the two below: I also get them with inserted tables. What should I do? I want to make sure my graphics are properly sized.

16.ERROR: TCFL_1st_ed_v021_epub11_sigil_idedit_edn_Ref.epub/OEBPS/Text/The Case for Lilith_1st_ed_v021_epub11.htm(2719): attribute "width" not allowed at this point; ignored

Line 2786 is 4th down:

Why are you putting your graphics inside a table? In any case, since width and border can't be used on the table element (& are being ignored), just remove them.

Page breaks & title page

Hi, wondering if someone can help me. I have created a ebook and insert and image for title page, inserted a page break with the icon which split the document. However when I read the finished epub file on iphone/ipad I am missing the first page. Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong. Am I using the wrong page breaks/chapter breaks?

Thanking you ahead.

Is the first page there on Sigil ?

What does the ePub look like in something like Calibre or ADE ?

Thanks Geoff, for that tip, looks like it was because the first page was flagged in Sigil as Cover and not Title, once I did this I am now able to see the cover. Now I just need to work out how to insert fonts into my file.

Can anyone walk me through this? Thanking you head!

Do you really want to put fonts in, rather than let the reader decide ?

Otherwise fonts go into the font folder of the epub wrapper .... [I've not used this option so am not in a position to advise]

I am all for "decorative style" fonts for Chapter Headings and "initial caps", and in a few special cases, where a distinctive font is called for (Remember when movie computers printed in MICR face?)
But the rest of the "body" choice of "font-family" should be up to the user, allowinf for the basic font-style: "normal,italic,monospace,small-caps"

Installation of Sigil-0.2.4 error

When I try to run the 32 bit version of Sigil-0.2.4 on my computer i get the error "This application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem." I have tried completely uninstalling it numerous times and reinstalling, but I still get this error. I am using a dell Inspiron 1520 with Windows XP 32bit.
Does anyone know a solution to this issue?

Looks like you're missing the required msvc runtime. I thought it installed it itself but I'm not sure.
Without a good deal of computer/hacking knowledge this is going to be difficult to solve. My approach in cases like this is to run procmon.exe from Sysinternals.com. It will show you which files and registry entries the program is trying to open. With a bit of detective work it is almost always possible to infer what is wrong with an installation.

Regards,

Joop
