I agree with you. I realized about 15 minutes into the movie that it was the best Bond film in at least the last 25 years. Daniel Craig's performance makes the previous Bond (Brosnan) look like he was doing a caricature of the character.

Anyone who didn't see it in the theater really missed out.

Catherine Keener played Mockingbird's author Harper Lee (Nelle Harper Lee) in the movie Capote. It was interesting to see a slice of Harper's life. Phillip Seymour Hoffman (Truman Capote) is one of our greatest actors. Harper and Capote were childhood friends in Alabama.

I assume that's meant as a fiction list. You know, I've read all but one of those and honestly, only Pride and Prejudice and Lord of the Rings might make it onto a top 10 list I've read. Maybe Great Expectations would be a contender but it's been so long since I read it.

What do you all think are the best 10 novels/fiction of all time?

List quite POOR. Completely Anglo-centric

I read all the replies in this thread. Granted I am new to this forum..but I am a bit amazed that this list is so English Oriented. Fact is there are hundreds of amazing books that have been written in languages outside of English. I only book on the list not originally in English is the Bible. I can think of 20 books that could make this list without even thinking. And coming from the BBC i find it even weaker. I usually like most BBC content but not this list

3. "Jane Eyre" by Charlotte Bronte.
4. Harry Potter books, by J.K. Rowling.

I've read 9 out of these 10 - the only one I'm missing is "To Kill a Mockingbird". Just wondered how many of these other forum members have read?

This was a survey of British people. Hardly surprising, therefore, that it's biased towards books in English.

I read all the Harry Potter books (although I listened to one as an audio book - extremely well read by Stephen Fry) and although I love the world she's crafted I don't really like HP as a hero and I don't think she's all that good a writer. A good story teller, yes, but not that good a writer.

I lurve top 10 lists. And with you guys here recommending Pullman and To Kill a Mockingbird I now have new titles & authors for on my 'to read' list.

I've never read To Kill a Mockingbird. But I have seen the movie a number of times and the movie is very good.

I am amazed at how many people seem to have read the bible. When you say you have read it does that mean reading without skipping any chapters? That would be very impressive. It is a very substantial book, after all.

I managed to read about half of it - mostly OT - when I went to early morning seminary while an exchange student in the U.S. . Other parts(apostles, letters, etc.) come up in regular intervals when attending church service. But I could never see myself reading the whole book from start to finish.

BTW: Not trying to question anyone's faith or dedication here!

Americans are, generally speaking, a much more religious lot than us. I read somewhere that more than 50% of Americans regularly attend church, compared with under 1% in the UK.

Did you expect to see The Master and Margarita on BBC list?

I've read everything but Pullman, which I'm sure I will get to someday. I think I have the dead tree versions around here somewhere.

Right now I'm re-reading 'Pride and Prejudice' using Harry's very nice illustrated LRF.

Philip Pullman's series, imho, rock! I couldn't wait to hit the next in the series when I read it a few years ago.
