I'd noticed that. I guess it shouldn't be too surprising given that early adopters of ereaders are likely to be technophiles. I do Things in IT myself.

The combination of "recluse" and "somewhere in my own head" fit the profile of "author," though "fiend without a face" and your avatar image would not coincide with "romance." Must be Dr. Phil's plastic surgeon.

I am a temporary worker, doing clerical work, mostly. Or, I will be, first job's Monday. I was working in a school, but we moved and with the school year starting they haven't hired aides yet. I'm hoping to get on somewhere permanently, whether in a school or an office somewhere.

What an odd mix. I don't want to get into a flame war about your insulting a few of these who are often the targets of snide remarks.

But do you really think teachers don't have to use all kinds of creativity to help students learn? I know there are lousy teachers out there...just like there are lousy artists. But some teachers are incredibly creative in their efforts to reach students.

I had a friend in college who was taking Education classes, and she said one of her classes was all about finding creative ways to explain things - they explored examples and metaphors, as I remember (for example), having to exclude using certain common works to describe things, forcing them to come up with other ways to make a point.

I know when I have to train people at work, I have a hard time with that. I'll describe a process that seems crystal clear to me, and for certain people (who don't learn the same way I do), I get a total blank stare. I've actually had to go find someone else in the department sometimes to see if they could phrase it differently. So I admire anyone who can not only teach, but shape their methods to the way the student learns best...

For those speaking of retirement, I'm in no hurry personally since I enjoy my work so greatly. Working until the body says "no more" is likely but not so much out of necessity. I'm having a good time so far.

For those responding who have retired, it would be relevant, I think, to say what you were doing that got you there. It is, after all, still your source of income I presume whether or not you are still actually engaged in the activity. Besides, it brings more to the conversation. If not what you do, what did you do all those years?

Hi,

I am a data analyst for a school board. I also support the student records, library and transportation systems used.

I have been in a computer tech job for 25 years. With the changes that I have seen over the years, I wonder what it will look like when I retire in 15 to 20 years.

(i LOVE both lawyers and estate agents!)
To tell the truth, I am a bit insulted you think my technical job isn't creative. I directly improve the lives of people every day by solving problems. It takes creativity to do that. At least as much creativity as the standard hack writer exhibits. And the best of us are as brilliant as they come regardless of profession.

What my job is not, is artistic. That is why so many of us 'techies' are also writers, photographers, painters, and sculptors, etc.
