In the U.S. recent court ruling has actually stated that it is legal to remove DRM as long as you are going to use your mp3/book for yourself only and not for illegal activities.
I don't know how it is in EU and other parts of the world but Im hoping that in the next 5-10 years things will change. Either way, you can always come to U.S. remove DMR and comeback to wherever you are from. LOL

It's gotten a lot easier. I'm not allowed to go into details here but a quick Google will lead you to the latest tools for removing DRM. I use Calibre to convert. It does a great job and you can convert in bulk.

Are you using Calibre default settings? I am hoping so...because it's the calibre step I feel most overwhelmed with. Bottom line...I don't mind taking a moment to remove the DRM...but I do not want to spend any time "fixing" conversion issues.

Sounds like I'll need to do some experimenting on my own. However I am quickly learning there is also quite a bit of free material that I think I will be interested in.

Has anyone ever converted from eReader to Kindle? I am familiar with the DRM removal process for eReader as well. I'm wondering how formatting and what not comes over.

Once the DRM is removed I use Calibre for any conversions. For the most part the books convert well but I've had the most problems with eReader books. Usually it's some of the punctuation that gets messed up but you can take the time to do a search and replacement and then the punctuation is fine.

The first thing I do is remove DRM, and put the book into Calibre. There I convert it if it isn't mobi, clean up metadata. Unfortunately, I have a fairly large to be read pile, so I don't look at it again until it comes to the top of the list. There may be some small problems, but nothing that interfered with my reading - just a momentary irritation.

Thank you. Well I just figured out DRM...how easy was THAT? (Once I found what I needed).

I had Calibre already...and because I've been reading electronic books for a number of years my library is, to be blunt, a real mess!!! Everything in the library is de drmd, but you can see where I bounced between prc, ereader, mobi, epub...and some of my books were converted by me to other formats. My library is a mess! I'll figure it out. Can't believe how far Calibre has come.

The script I use for stripping is not part of Calibre nor is it written by Kovid (don't want to get him in trouble here). I have added it as a plug-in to Calibre. When I add a mobipocket/azw book to my Library, the DRM is automatically removed. For the conversion, I use the default Calibre settings and the results have been great. I like to customize the metadata first, but I'm persnickety about such things.

The calibre settings were what I was wondering about.

Thanks.

Not sure of the official rulings here in Australia, but I only do it when I buy an epub that has really bad formatting. Unfortunately Amazon seem to be the only players that will refund an ebook purchase based upon poor formatting of an ebook. When I say poor formatting, I'm talking excessive margins, which when you increase font size to readable (the margins increase with font size) you wind up with a narrow strip about 5-7 words across. Can't get a refund on the epubs, can't read them, so what does one do? Fix it themselves.

Amazon is good in you can view the sample first, so I'm guessing that will show exactly how they have formatted the ebook.

And their CS is quite helpful too. Waterstones', for example, is a pain in the neck; either they ignore you or they won't follow your case .

None of us can predict the future, but Amazon's stated aim is to get every book formatted for Kindle - and apparently they sell 61% of all e-books......
