I am starting to have ideas about these digital...freaks?. No they are not freaks. d something. ben thornton found a good name for them. dippies.

They are about 1/2 generation from us in general. The right time for a a step in sense, like some call the discontinuities in established ways. these steps are forcedly antithetic. And spontaneously go in the direction of enthropy.

Let me clear with an example. Techno music, a step of sense it is difficult that will go toward ancient music playing with original instruments (maybe one or two) , but to something even more electronic.

These dips are possibly a manifestations similar to the Aussie downshifters.
On this some of th Ozzies come and help.

I'm not sure that their life is actually any simpler - and they're not moving away from their jobs to a different place. They're just replacing physical stuff with digital stuff.

The problem is when they attempt to replace something like accommodation, which doesn't have a digital equivalent. That seemed particularly dippy to me

I think that people are right to compare it to people dropping out of other social norms, which has always happened. Part of what grates with people, I think, is that this often seems to involve dropping responsibilities while still expecting the benefits, and thinking that this is terribly clever (or far out, or otherwise fashionable). Humbug!

To some extent .... hidden costs we pay to live the way we do seem to be passing them by - in way, ... Yes ... it's laudable and enviable, but at the same time ... selfish.

Whether this is a sustainable existence only time will tell ....

I realised when I was quite young that the fewer responsibilities I have, the happier I am.
So, among other things, I never aspired to have a family, never seek promotion to managerial positions, and live in a small house that enabled me to pay off a mortgage asap.
For some people, dropping reponsibilities (or not taking them on in the first place) suits their lifestyle - but that doesn't necessarily mean they don't accept the consequences of their decisions, and the loss of the up-sides.

Quite true. But what I was saying was that when people "drop out", it often means dropping responsibilities while expecting society to support them in various ways - perhaps invisible to them. The point was raised earlier - where does a digital vagrant get their power from? Where do they wash clothes? Cook? Do they ever clean a toilet? etc.

How do they make their contribution to the local services - you (probably) and I pay our water and council taxes that pay for a multitude of services not covered by Income Tax.

I was wondering that - and also, how they have a credit card without a registered address. Perhaps mummy and daddy enter the equation?

(and yes, I pay my local taxes )

Ah, that was another one I thought of last night .... credit / loans (if needed) - proof of address lived in for years before a mortgage can be applied for ....

Maybe they have answers to all these questions, and more.

My question would be, why are we assuming the worst of people?

We're not, we're being realistic about what people are like. Why assume that people are saints? They're not.
