I signed the contract for my first post-college job today! It's an admin position in admissions and financial aid for my alma mater's graduate programs. In my free time, I'm going to be doing non-profit development for this awesome organization that provides support to "underprivileged youth". I'm clearly in my young idealist phase.

You just made me feel a hell of a lot better. ![]() At it's simplest level they say that you're a "professional" when you get paid for doing the work. I have therefore been a professional (lowercase p) maintaining networks, writing software, and creating user manuals. Unfortunately the pay has always started with a lowercase p. I've worked in the medical field and as an EMT. I've even developed safety seminars for industrial environments. It sounds good, but there has always been that lowercase p. Working for a defense contractor I computerized their secure asset management records using dBase III+. My supervisor, with a post WW2 degree in botany, had everything on 3x5 cards. As I had no degree, I had no chance of getting his position when he retired. Again, pay with a lowercase p. Funny thing was, after I left my job it was split among 3 people and a part time data entry person. Where ever I go I provide more than they were asking for and have been given greater responsibility. But always there has been the lowercase p. Now I install security access systems. Mostly for collages, companies doing sensitive research, and the military. A better way to describe it is that as the hardware is installed, I setup the computer software and integrate the personnel data, followed by software training. A software switch to SQL is driving me nuts. Five years to retirement and I have to learn SQL. On my own, of course. My advise to any who are still in school is to get a degree. Think about it this way - the HR department is staffed by people with degrees. So to them it's more important that the person they recommend has a degree than some one with no degree but a proven track record. Last edited by SameOldStory; 08-19-2010 at 01:34 AM. |

I'm an ERP consultant. You know that software that was implemented at your/your friend/brother in law/cousin/best friend/aunt's company, that had everybody going crazy for 6 to 18 months? I'm the one implementing it

I love this job because usually people get so desperate trying to make this thing work within a ridiculous timeframe and budget, they get all teary and grateful when I get to help them. I do try to help, but sometimes my clients won't let me I've been working free-lance for 6-7 years.I have implemented SAP in Malaysia, Taiwan, the US, Japan, France, Italy, Spain, Germany, Denmark, The Netherlands. Currently working on Hungary and Turkey, but I put my foot down a few years ago and decided to stop travelling. Mostly I manage to at least spend most of my time working within métro range of home. I love this job, but after 14 years or so it has lost some of the excitement. I'd like to find a nice quiet part-time contract some day and spend the rest of my time doing art. By the way, I'm 47 and I learn something new every day. That's one of the appeals of the job. Getting older and more experienced has made me more relaxed about facing change and challenges, not less able to meet them. |
