It's always been that way.
And maybe that's what is bothering me about this. Yes, I admit I'm a little jealous, and every once in a while I'd like to just go walkabout. And I love my electronics, oh yes. My cell phone, my netbook, my reader -- I'd feel lost without them. On the other side of the coin, though, I can shear a sheep, spin the wool, weave it up and sew a garment, or knit a garment. And I've got all the non-electric tools to do so. I could possibly manage to feed myself. (Okay, I'm a little weak on the food production stuff.) So yes, I like the digital life, but I recognize that there are lots of satisfying parts to living more simply, and more simply does not normally involve working less. Working cooperatively, maybe, but not less, and with less responsibility for yourself.

I've possibly veered off-topic a little bit...

I feel the same duplicity you do. I like working with my hands as much as using computers................... Maybe that's why I felt at home with the Touch interface of the iPad!

I'm a minimalist. I like the "digital lifestyle" (ew, giving me bad connotations of consumerism and "instant gratification", superficiality and so on), but I don't get that sort of thing:

Getting rid of "clutter" by way of getting rid of "stuff", only to live in other people's clutter ...
