Could it be "The Family Tree" by Sheri S Tepper? It's not been around for 20 years, published in 1998, but it is about nature (flora at least) fighting back against the concrete jungle. It's been a long time since I read it, but I think there was someone encased in a tree near the end.

Phooey. I have those books but I cannot remember the names.
In the first one, the book cover shows the pilot in the cockpit of the starship, with long talons on his fingers.

I'll have to look through my books.

Many years ago I was staying with some friends for a few days, and began to read a sc-fi short story anthology they had. One of the stories stuck in my head, but I have no idea who wrote it (H.G. Wells perhaps??), nor its title.

The premise was a society of human-like beings whose planet, for reasons I can't recall, was no longer habitable. They collected thier own DNA, altered it, and re-introduced themselves in the ocean. The beings in the water had some early records but because they had been damaged, were unsure of their origins. One particular thing I recall is that they had knowledge (from the books) of chemistry, but were unable to practice it because the chemicals would float away whenever they'd begin an experuiment. This too made them curious about their origins.

Does anyone here know the title of this story? If so, thanks in advance!!
Thanks for the help,
John
The story is "Surface Tension" by James Blish. It is collected in many anthologies, most notably THE SEEDLING STARS by Blish

Hi folks,

I'm at wit's end on finding this Science Fiction book that I've read a few years ago and liked very much. I can't recall the author but I think the title MAY be "The Prodigal Son" or "The Prodigal Son Returns" or some variant. I'm not quite sure.

The protagonist is a woman. She was a merchanary pilot of some type who had a talent for hyper-jumping. Very few at the time had this comodity to stay concious during a jump so they were pretty sought after. She befriended a robot/android companion who was "male". One of the issues she was facing was that she was starting to burn out from too much "hyper-jumping" and had to start doping because she would sometimes momentarily black out during a "jump".

Spoiler:
And I think she was hired to deliver a package or case of some sort. I remember that the robot male character, she thought was a good guy until the end revealed that he was evil all along.
I can't recall much other details about it.
Any help would be appreciated

NEVERMIND I found it!

The Prodigal Sun (Evergence, Book One)
by Sean Williams and Shane Dix

Fun piece of Space Opera

Can any one recognize this one?
Main lead doesn't age and has a demon/djinn familiar - he's wondering around the US looking for the original scroll that he used when he bound the familiar to undo the deal. The details are really hazy but the book ended with a giant owl appearing and dragging the familiar off.
Sorry it's not much to go on

Possibly Practical Demonkeeping by Christopher Moore, but I don't remember the owl.

I read this book, honest (not ebook); but for some reason recall few details about it. I guess you'd describe it as a psychological thriller. I don't remember if it's a favourite or unknown-to-me author; if it was recent or maybe from the 50's, or a recently written book set in the 50's.

A man who lives alone and normally keeps to himself, is just about to start his vacation. He receives a letter (first of several I think) which threatens to kill someone in his family - a niece I think , who he was not close to - if he didn't kill himself (I think that's the threat). He lives in NY I think and communicates with the threatener via classified adds in a paper, I think the NY Times. There was a murder in the subway, a major fire, there are some homeless person(s) involved I think.

Trigger any bells with anyone? Thanks for any help. It's really been bugging me.

Can anyone help with this one, please? I read it years ago and loved it. I'd like to try some of the authors other works but can't remember who that may be!

Someone (a woman, I think) buys an old house in Scotland and during renovations discovers a notebook under the floorboards. It's the diary of a young Quaker in the 1700's who travels to Canada to find his sister, who has gone missing. The tale is all about his trials in the wilderness.
I can't even remember whether it's all fiction or based on a genuine journal.

All clues appreciated!

Thanks,
Chris

I don't know what the book was, because when I read it. I borrowed it from someone, but it was missing the covers, and was probably only the first couple chapters (the book was half destroyed).

There were some kids (They had a pet parrot, I think) and they snuck onto someone's plane and were stranded on some island...at the point where it left off for me, they were staying in a cave behind a waterfall, but the entrance was a hole that was covered with plants and was hard to see. I know it's not a lot to go on. Oh, and I think the guy that owned the plane was named Bill. @_@

Thanks

That sounds like one of Enid Blyton's Adventure series.
