Great thread !
I'm a HP Unix Systems Engineer in a pretty large, global company, that amongst many other things, offers Out Sourcing Services. Mostly I'm responsible for implenting new large system complexes, mostly Oracle/SAP systems, and troubleshooting once they're in production. Quite exiting with worldwide operations, where factories all over the world are affected if problems occur. However problems rarely happen to spoil my beauty sleep, cause THAT i really need :-)
Retirement ? Well - hope to get there, and know about it
Cheers

Thank god we also have some very experienced unix admins & dba's because otherwise i'd go crazy
Funny part is , everytime we try to hire people they either leave after a year or nobody wants to start ... and that during economic crisis .. Very odd
Yeah I wear many Data Warehousing hats too! Data warehousing is still a 'hot' field, and here in the US, anyway, so is anyone with Teradata skills. Guys like us have options, even in a recession. Look at 'em cross-eyed, and they will move on.

Me? I'm close enough to retirement that job stability is far more important than, well, anything else. So I stick around, and everytime some kid gets his knickers all bunched up and leaves, management gives me a raise (well, almost every time!). Though I am pretty sick of training someone just to have them move on.

And a login and password

He is the sort of person where not only does the bread land butter side up but on the way to the floor a $5 bill will stick to it. Best example I've got is this...
As a newly hired white water rafting guide he had to have a kayak. Not having much in the way of funds he got a used kayak, held together with duct tape and bubble gum. Aside from some minor leaks it worked well for him. Towards the end of the season the company he works for is hosting a trip out of state, all the guides deliver their kayaks and packs to the loading point where the company loads everything into buses and onto kayak carriers. Somewhere in the mountains of West Virginia a kayak, that had not been tied down properly, falls off the rack, and breaks into more than several pieces.

Yes, of course, it was his kayak. As they were in the middle of nowhere, had no extra company kayaks with them, and since he needed one in order to work, they ended up buying him a brand new one at the next outfitters they passed.

......

He got a job as a ski instructor having never skied more than a few times in his life.

......

The only reason he got the job at Denali (he was something like number 250 on the list of all equally qualified people) was because he had nothing holding him bank and he could say "Sure, I can be there in a week".

Hate him, hate him, hate him
well I wouldn't say I am quite that lucky and have indeed been having a spate of quite BAD luck the last 5 years. but still. I get hired on most mountains that I just walk onto.

I've just rarely encountered an adventure I didn't like!

What is it with real estate as a fallback position lately, especially when half of them pronounce it "realator"? Seriously.

Salary-wise, I'm actually not shooting for the stars; I'm not one of these 22-year-olds who went to college hearing about the Go-Go-'90s who fell out of school expecting to be the next Steve Jobs. I like the mundane stuff. All I'm seeing in job-search sites is management-level stuff that people would be crazy to leave during a recession in the first place.

I'm a Software Testing Manager in the company which develops software for ATMs, paying terminals etc. I'm also a copywriter and have my own casino affiliate site, but haven't got any decent income from it though

Welcome to MR bookluvr64!!!
This is a great place to hang out with people who like books and eReaders. I think there are some other forums here as well where you can find out what's happening in the world of eReaders and related tech in general.

Have fun, browse, walk around a bit but avoid all the dogs, chickens, hermits, cats, and other assorted and sundry animals! Robots are, of course, perfectly fine.

I'm planning to work until I'm at least 70 (if I'm physically able). I think many other people will have to work that long too, whether or not they want or plan to!

Well, I've worked here for 35 years, but I started at 18, so, you do the math. Yep, I'm 53. It's definitely early for retirement, but my place of business is closing down and they offered, and I said yes.

Not quite sure what my plans are long-term, but short-term I'm going to take care of my mom. She's 89 and needs my attention right now. :-)

Was going to be a Libriarian, started volunteering with the National Park Service when I was 15, still working for them today. Was a Ranger for many years, now I guess I am in "management" (and turning into the old-timer, I actually demonstrated how to polish shoes to some student hires today...I am getting old). My technical title is "Cultural Resource Specialist" (aka: History Geek) but my park is soooo small I do whatever is needed: artifact curation, compliance, adminstrative stuff, nature stuff (which is funny because I'm a history geek. "what's that thing? Well if it is moving, it's probably an animal....if it's not, its a plant...or a dead animal...does it stink?) web stuff (IT by default, which is sort of sad) and so on.

Basically I have mostly a desk job....so WOE to the unwarey visitor who catches me in the hall to ask me a question....BOOM instant ranger program whether they want it or not!

Working for the government these days is kind of weird. Park Service employees tend to be the "hippies" of the government anyways, and then I get strange thoughts in my head like: "my salary is paid by taxpayers....yet I am a taxpayer....am I paying myself....am I reimbursing part of my salary back in taxes??" You can tell I have been in the office too long, when I start thinking those odd thoughts. Must...get...out..of....office.....soon.....

Denise
