We have a laptop, a netbook, a Sony-505 and a Kindle-2 in the family and love them all. If we didn't have any of those and were going to buy something, it would be an iPad hands down. But not the current release- would wait for the next version - or for a similar device from someone like Google.

Yeah, that's usually the best position on a new gadget. I bought the cheapest, save one, iPad, knowing that the next iteration will be twice as nice, and figuring that I'll hand off this one to someone else. But frankly, now that i have this one, I don't see how it can be improved enough to warrant getting the next one, unless it is significantly lighter or smaller. But I'm sure Steve will prove me wrong, somehow. The next one will print free money or something.

Ironically, this is a common argument against the iPad. The lack of Flash support, disallowing SIM card swapping for 3G service providers, not providing a slot for external storage... these are all design choices Apple made.

Amazon should have released KDK earlier, no doubt. However, if history provides any lesson here, it's that the next version of iPad hardware will be different than the current (first) generation, and anyone who bought the first iPhone or the 3G (before the 3GS) can attest to this frustration. Apple's lucrative business model with gadgets seems to be get them out fast, and change as much with every generation as you can get away with. Granted, they can't afford to have too many prototyping cycles lest the leaks from their Chinese sweatshops make it easy for Apple ripoffs to make it to market before Apple does.

So if you think the Kindle needs improvement but the iPad doesn't... well, vaya con dios. To borrow from The Oracle: You have already made your choice, you've come here to argue about WHY you made it.

What do you mean "disallowing SIM card swapping for 3G service providers"? I can go into my local Apple store and get an iPad SIM for any one of four different service providers or, with a little more work, use any of half a dozen more.

Let me rephrase: "using a SIM card form factor that is not currently used in the US and is not universally recognized as a future standard." This issue means less to you in the UK from a practical point of view, but the point stands.

ETA: ...and the idea that I can't use my iPhone SIM in an iPad is a bit frustrating. Debatable, but frustrating.

If you really want a tablet, you should wait. There are going to be some really good tablets coming out later this year and early next year. One great example is the Notion Ink Adam. It is supposed to be released in time for the holidays. It will run Android, has Tegra 2 (so it does full HD no problem), and has a Pixel Qi screen. Also, it costs less that the cheapest iPad. The Pixel Qi version will be $498.

The ipad is heavier.

The ipad can't be read in sunlight.

The kindle's battery lasts longer.

Eink (generally) provides a better reading experience.

... but you only wanted one reason, didn't you?

Also, if you actually got an international Kindle as opposed to the US model...

The ipad is no heavier than, oh say, a hardback. Battery life and Eink- those are the selling points.

I sold my Kindle 2 to buy an iPad. Hated reading on the iPad. I found it really fatiguing. Yes, it opens up a lot of reading possibilities, but what's the point if you cannot read in sunlight?

Don't get me wrong; I love my iPad for other stuff and unlike other people, I do believe you can create and not just consume content, but I haveva Kindle 3 on order. A reader should be just that. If it cannot mimic the book experience 100% than what is the point IMHO.

If you want to buy the iPad solely as an ebook reader, I would advise against it. It is heavy, you can’t read outside and it will cause eyestrain.

You got me. I can't. If the DX isn't right for you you should sell it.

I'll give you $100 for it. I'll even pay for shipping.

(Looks hopeful.)

To put it into perspective, it's about the same weight as the typical hardback book. True, you can't read outside but, on the other side of the coin, you can't read on the Kindle in poor light, a situation for which the backlit iPad is excellent. You'll only get eyestrain if you have the brightness set too high; turn it down to the minimum level at which you can still comfortably read the page.

But it's not a case of "one or the other". I have both an iPad and a Kindle, and use each in the circumstances for which it's best suited.
