I'm retired after 27 1/2 years in the U.S. Air Force. My specialty was Inventory Management Specialist, which is supply.

I loved it - not so much for the work but for the traveling. I got to be stationed in various states here in the U.S., plus I had the opportunity to live in Korea, Turkey, Germany, England, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Iraq (not to mention the opportunity for vacation travel throughout various parts).

Currently (for something to do out of the house) I have a part-time job working as a data entry clerk for an adult education program.

Mostly, now, I go to college for a second degree (Accounting). Then, maybe, I'll be able to figure out what I want to be when I grow up!

This is a fun thread. It is neat seeing what careers people have found themselves in. Twenty years ago, I would have never imagined myself where I am today. I work at the largest church in Central Maine. My jobs are everything creative, but I was hired to produce a weekly television program. During the week I write skits for the children's Sunday program, share worship music with the kids, create After Effects animations for the projection screen announcements, and a variety of video products for our church and school.

When I'm not at the church, I'm at home writing, or spending time with my family. The last few years I have managed to produce two full length books, and I'm halfway through a third. It has been quite a ride. Busy doesn't even begin to describe my weeks. But I wouldn't have it any other way.

Regards,
John Michael Hileman

if it communicates on copper or fiber I install it, maintain it, put it in, rip it out, upgrade it whatever. everything from DCOs (dial central offices where your dial tone comes from) out to the end user. primarily, but not solely on military contracts. I'm trying to get into telecommunications projects managements now. I'm too busted up to be climbing anymore poles.

I also teach skiing, doesn't get me rich, but pays for the season pass, some equipment, and I usually don't go too far into debt feeding myself.

I've also made money training horses and dogs, being a whitewater guide and a backpacking guide.

I've degrees in history, anthropology and para-legal. only ever made money at the para-legal one.

and raised two children, two husbands and assorted boyfriends along the way.

also trying to figure out what to be when I grow up

Since I'm already married I should introduce you to my brother... He lives in Alaska and is full time swim coach. In the summer however he takes month long trips with troubled/at-risk kids into the wilderness, he has also been a white water guide, a ski instructor, a back country ranger at Denali National Park, a sled dog trainer, youth and family services councilor, and spent a year back packing and hiking in New Zealand, Australia, and a bunch of Asian countries on his way home. He hasn't been married yet but has gone through several girl friends - you guys would be great for each other

Oh, and yes - I hate him!!

I work in "litigation support"--scan/copy/print legal files, data harvesting, sometimes PDF bookmarking & linking. (I really like the PDF bookmarking & linking part of the job, but it's hard to get more of that work; the people who hire us don't understand PDFs enough to know how to ask for what they want done with them. Or they want it all back in an hour.)

I also do freelance document conversion of various sorts, some of which pays me.

Have been professionally working with PDFs for over 10 years. There are features from Acrobat 4.0 that I remember fondly, and miss intensely any time I wind up creating form fields.

I have been many things over my working career -- short order cook, bank manager (assistant), welfare frauds investigator, social worker with children, car salesman, worker on a road crew, and several other not-too-long-lasting jobs. My primary careers were a stint as a lawyer from which I morphed into publishing. In publishing, I have been president of a small publishing house, managing editor at a couple of major publishers, and finally, for the past 26 years, self-employed as owner of my own specialty editing company.

Thanks for the link. Very interesting to learn about a field that I was completely unaware of!

I work in development for the local affiliate of an educational/cultural not-for-profit organization.

Like most fundraisers, I didn't think I'd be one when I grew up, but I find it fascinating.

I actually wanted to be an (academic) book editor when I grew up (got my M.A. in history), but stumbled into event fundraising as a temp job while writing my thesis, and transitioned into other fundraising disciplines when that got boring.

I still keep track of the publishing world, since it is tangentially related to my job, so I get access to a lot of free publishing webinars, most of which are about e-Books right now. Sadly, they are way too focused on getting on the iPad platform.

I am supposed to be an accountant. But my job seems to entail everything that has the whiff of computer about it. Setting up systems, installing stuff, fixing barcodes, IT support etc.
