Tips for new owner

Hi All. With the Kindle WiFi expected to be hitting our hot little hands within the next 2-3 weeks (all things being equal) just wanting to get from people here some tips for a new Amazon/Kindle owner. This will be my second reader however my first Kindle. Does anyone have any tips or pitfalls to warn about? Is it recommended to condition the battery like other reader manufacturers suggest? Or should I not worry, go with the flow, enjoy my new toy and rub it in the face of non-Kindle owners??

By all means enjoy it. If you should encounter any problems, check here - lots of knowledgeable folk post & read posts here.

[Rubbing the face of non-Kindle owners may result in unforeseen consequences!]

I don't know if it had any effect, but as soon as I received my K2 I fully charged it, discharged it completely and then fully charged it again. I have had great battery life for the last year and a half.

I would recommend getting a cover. I got the standard Kindle cover and my K2 still looks like new.

I also got a skin for my Kindle. Not required, but something to add a personal touch.

Other than that, I haven't experienced any problems and have not really been worried about my K2. I bring it everywhere and use it, and it just works.

P.S. Get in the habit of bringing it EVERYWHERE. I can't tell you how many times in the beginning I was kicking myself for not having it with me.

I agree about the cover. It's definitely useful, and there are some really nice ones out there.

You may find you need some kind of straight-jacket for your finger because you will probably be one-clicking everything you come across. Doing this a little is ok. Filling your kindle on the first day might pose a problem. Have fun!

Add one more strong recommendation to get a cover, even if you only use it if you plan to take your Kindle out of the house. I had the M-Edge Latitude Jacket for my K2 and I'm looking forward to the K3 model. Skins are fun to customize your Kindle. DecalGirl is a very popular choice. Their skins fit well and when you want a change they come off without leaving any residue. A reading light might be useful depending on how and where you use your Kindle. Two of the more popular are the M-Edge eLuminiator2 or the Octavo Solis.

I would recommend downloading the User's Guide form Amazon in either PDF format or using one of the various Kindle Apps for PC, Mac, Android, etc. Read it from beginning to end even before your Kindle gets here. Then go through it again when you get your Kindle. Once you get familiar with your Kindle, look through it again to find ways of doing things that may not have clear before.

Thanks guys, looks like there is nothing to really worry about. I have ordered a cover, the stock Amazon cover (it is all that is available right now, and being in Australia if I waited for others to become available I would have been hit hard for postage on the single item, so combining right now and postage overall was quite reasonable, plus the stock cover does look nice).

TomF, thanks, I've downloaded the user guides (read the quick start, nothing too informative there). Just after I ordered my Kindle I converted all my epubs to mobi (yes they are legitimate DRM-free ebooks), and they look good in Kindle4PC so hopefully the formatting etc will look the same on the Kindle itself.

Ok no-one really knows about the K3, but with the K2 is there a recommended maximum number of ebooks I should copy across in one hit? I understand that the Kindles will index new ebooks, so I'm guess if there are too many it will take A LONG time to index. Is it best to copy across in batches ie: 10-20 at a time, or just copy the whole 300 and let it do its thing?

I would just until you go to bed to start the transfer. Leave it plugged in either to your computer or an AC outlet. Doing it this way won't tax the battery or your patience.
