I work in IT. Mainly in the datawarehouse / Business Intelligence sector
The thing is we are highly understaffed so apart from creating ETL & reports, we are also administrator for all the DWH tools, system analyst , project manager, partial DBA, partial unix admin.
Thank god we also have some very experienced unix admins & dba's because otherwise i'd go crazy
Funny part is , everytime we try to hire people they either leave after a year or nobody wants to start ... and that during economic crisis .. Very odd

If it's anything like my last couple of sys admin jobs, you can only take getting calls at 2:30am nightly and still be expected at the office at 8am for so long before you throw your hands up and say "Enough."

Contrary to what many people in the industry think, sanity is not overrated.

I'm a website programmer. Mostly ASP.NET/C#/jQuery. However, I'm transitioning to something that I think is in a little higher demand--at least around here: computational biology. I start a part-time Master's degree programming this semester. So let's see if they can teach an old dog new tricks!

The really exciting letters in the mailbox, you know.

CNC stands for "computed numerically controlled." Essentially, I program the computer that controls a machine tool.
