We have a laptop, a netbook, a Sony-505 and a Kindle-2 in the family and love them all. If we didn't have any of those and were going to buy something, it would be an iPad hands down. But not the current release- would wait for the next version - or for a similar device from someone like Google.

But keep your Kindke, you will return to it after your feeling for iPad about its weight and eyestrain, especially after you read a big book. |

Amazon should have released KDK earlier, no doubt. However, if history provides any lesson here, it's that the next version of iPad hardware will be different than the current (first) generation, and anyone who bought the first iPhone or the 3G (before the 3GS) can attest to this frustration. Apple's lucrative business model with gadgets seems to be get them out fast, and change as much with every generation as you can get away with. Granted, they can't afford to have too many prototyping cycles lest the leaks from their Chinese sweatshops make it easy for Apple ripoffs to make it to market before Apple does. So if you think the Kindle needs improvement but the iPad doesn't... well, vaya con dios. To borrow from The Oracle: You have already made your choice, you've come here to argue about WHY you made it. |

What do you mean "disallowing SIM card swapping for 3G service providers"? I can go into my local Apple store and get an iPad SIM for any one of four different service providers or, with a little more work, use any of half a dozen more.

The ipad is no heavier than, oh say, a hardback. Battery life and Eink- those are the selling points. Regards, John Michael Hileman Last edited by Dr. Drib; 09-01-2012 at 02:38 PM. |

I sold my Kindle 2 to buy an iPad. Hated reading on the iPad. I found it really fatiguing. Yes, it opens up a lot of reading possibilities, but what's the point if you cannot read in sunlight?
Don't get me wrong; I love my iPad for other stuff and unlike other people, I do believe you can create and not just consume content, but I haveva Kindle 3 on order. A reader should be just that. If it cannot mimic the book experience 100% than what is the point IMHO. |

If you want to buy the iPad solely as an ebook reader, I would advise against it. It is heavy, you can’t read outside and it will cause eyestrain.

But it's not a case of "one or the other". I have both an iPad and a Kindle, and use each in the circumstances for which it's best suited. |
