A computer generally uses a dynamic display as I see it.

WRT to the iliad, a screen that size would be great (together with an easy-to-use universal converter) for displaying common pdf files. I agree it provides a good compromise between being big enough but more portable than a full 11" display. A Sony-type Reader with an 8" (or maybe 9") screen would be hard to resist.

OTOH, I have zero interest in an iliad. The lack of an instant-on and horrible battery life make it a non-option. I simply want a device to read books. The Sony fits that bill perfectly for me--it is almost like carrying a paperback around (OK, maybe a huge stack of paperbacks!). But, I open it and flick a switch an d it is on. And recharging is a rare event. It is always available, quickly, like a paper book. Daily charging requirements and slow start-up are deal-killers for me.
When you draw or write to an Iliad, display is changed on the go just like a computer. That is a proof of refresh rate and I think, one of the big power draws when you uses the device in that mode.

No, not just like a computer. If you look closely, you will see that the screen is not keeping up with your pen strokes.

When I use the virtual keyboard, the refresh of the field I am entering is agonizingly slow compared to a computer.

The first Macs were even slower than that. I was just entering this information as proof that there was a refresh rate even if it is an eink display.

BTW Congrats on the Iliad, I didn't know you cracked for one, I'm still pondering on that since the investment is a killer.

Well, yeah, there *is* a refresh rate. It is just too slow to display moving objects as would be expected/required of a real "computer." And e-ink technology has an inherent limitation on refresh rate (or response time, if you prefer).

The current generation of eInk, yes. In a few years, though, we should have eInk which is capable of "video" refresh rates. This has already been demonstrated - there's a video somewhere on this site which shows it.

I've wanted a decent letter sized technical pdf reader for years. I'd like a reader that is light and reasonably portable, but since I would use it mostly at home, it wouldn't need to be made for jet setting around the country. Nothing I've tried has really worked to replace the paper version of my tech books. I hope that some sort of reader will become available in the near future. I'd buy one if it is somewhat affordable and would handle technical books, manuals, newspapers and magazines. I'd like color because so many illustrations that accompany manuals use color, magazines use color, and so do newspapers, but I'd probably try a first generation black and white if it had a larger screen and could handle the other stuff that I mentioned.

Nope, it's too big for what I want in a reader. I like the portability of the sony. I bought my reader for one thing only and that is to read.

Sure an 11 OR 12" eInk reader would be my choice when the time comes to upgrade my 505 in a couple of years. I do 95% of my reading at home, so the larger size being less "portable" in terms of tossin git into a carry bad would not be an issue.

And as Harry indicated - a bigger unit would require and should have room for a better battery - and PLEASE make the battery user replaceable. I dread the thought of losing my reader to send it off to get the stupid battery replaced.

Other nice options would be at least the current 8-scale gray of the 505 - maybe more - color not a big deal for me in terms of reading books, but I could see it for manuals and educational books down the line. A touch/stylus screen might also be attractive but for me not particularly important for a reader - Sony's ten buttons down the side and the "joystick" c0oncept work fine so far. While I really don't want the clutter of a keyboard on my reader like the Kindle, it would be nice to have some way of implementing a dictionary lookup feature - but lets mkake it a subtantial dictionary - most of them don't have a lot of the words used in the 18th and 19th century English literature I like to read (it is the Dickens to figure some of those words LOL).

For me, something that big would have to have a touch screen, or at least some way of sketching into it (ideally not tablet support, it needs to be built in). But I would really love a big e-ink reader with a decent battery.

Also, now that we're getting big storage, a decent search function both within a book and for a book is essential. Even with only 2Gb of storage many readers are struggling in this area. Not helped by Sony deciding that 'ridiculously large' was the only font size for menus.

Such a large screen would be of interest to me only if the device used a form of flexible eInk, and then the whole thing was collapsible. Basically an oversized Readius is what I envision. In this way I could have the best of both worlds (size and portability).

I think I'll stick with my Kindle, since the size is comparable to a paperback book. Even the reading area size.

However -- the Macbook Air I just got at the office would make a really nice PDF reader! It's exceedingly light and transportable. Has a keyboard too. But of course -- it isn't e-ink.

Nope. It looks neat, but it would be less portable and the risk of damage would be greater.

I'd stick with my 505. Textbooks are the only problem, but in landscape mode it's still fine. A slightly larger font size for the more unwieldy PDFs would be nice.

When they get cheap I might purchase a larger e-Book, it would have limited uses. Otherwise the 505 is great, the contrast is a bit nicer than the 500, so the only real improvement in screen technology that I really would like is color e-Ink. Otherwise there isn't much that a different reader would do "better" than the 505.

My next big technology purchase will be a nice OLED display.

In a heartbeat.

I have the eReader and I am just waiting for the bigger brother to be announced.

I'd have both and carry both in the briefcase.

I can wait to see the new Dell E... it has a 9inch screen. Love to know what the batter life on this guy is. Might make a good combo traveling machine/reader. It's supposed to be available at $299. http://www.engadget.com/2008/07/15/e...-dell-e-launc/

I'd personally rather have a 8" sized 505-type reader. I want more screen space than the current 505, but retain as much of the portability as possible. I could see myself being interested in something 10" perhaps if it was affordable, had long battery life, and good refresh rates.. so something like a cheap tablet PC. But at that point, why not get a cheap tablet PC? I'd have to see how it measures up against the other options.
