I hope for your sake B&N doesn't go out of business then. Although your nook would keep working... just not wireless 3G or book store.

All you can use 3G for on the nook is to access the B&N bookstore. If that went out of business, the fact that the 3G also stopped working would be pretty irrelevant.

You've got a (basic) web browser on nook as well.
Whether it makes much sense, to browse the web on ePaper devices...

Yes, but it only operates with WiFi, not 3G. 3G on the nook can only be used to access the B&N bookstore.

REally... so why buy a nook. If you want to reader with WiFi that supports WiFi.. are there other options? Perhaps there aren't.

I've always been using the softrooted version. If I remember correctly, the softrooted one was/ia able to access the web via 3G as well (didn't really pay attention. Web capability is of non-importance for me on my eReaders).

When softrooting nook, for example you can stream your eBooks via calibre onto your nook.
eBook readers won't have iPad web-capabilities in the near future. But is that really important?
Personally, I only want 3 things via WiFi:
a.) I want to purchase on my reader, not on the PC/Mac.
b.) I prefer, not being bound to the manufacturer's webstore, but being able to purchase "everywhere".
c.) Sometimes it may be helpful, to check something in Wikipedia or briefly Google for it.

nook concerning those 3 issues:
a.) You always have been able to download your books via WiFi. Way more convenient than USB of course. On softrooted nook, you can install VPN and even purchase directly on nook.
b.) Probably it would be possible via the web browser on softrooted nook. I've never bothered, as I don't like nook for sideloaded content (like it a lot for the B&N stuff though).
c.) Not very convenient, but it can be done via the web browser, although it would be more comfortable of course to directly jump to Wikipedia from within the book you're just reading.

It depends what you want. As a fiction reader, it's fine, although rather basic in terms of functionality. One thing to be aware of is that it has a very old version of the ADE firmware that displays ePub books, resulting in all such books being displayed left-justified; I don't like that myself, but many people aren't bothered by it.

If you want more advanced features, such as dictionary lookup, annotation, searching, etc, you'll need to look elsewhere.

But €100 is certainly a good price.

In general, I'm a fan of Sony readers. Did love Sony 505, Sony 900 still is one of my favorites.
Bot personally, Sony 300 is my least favorite Sony reader. And it's my least favorite 5" reader.
There's only a single option for turning pages: The central 5-way-button.
I don't like this from an ergonomic perspective, I'd like the button on the edges of the reader.
PocketBook 360 for example has a hack to use the gyroscope: Turning pages by slightly moving your wrist.

Cybook Opus does have 2 buttons to the right: Turning pages back and forth.

There's a hack for Sony 300 as well. You can define one of the number buttons to the right for turning pages. But that button's not designed for turning pages...

Personally, I only can recommend not going for a compromise. You'll use your reader for hundreds of hours. An additional $ 50 now my hurt, but it's totally worth it.
Only go for the reader you're totally fine with...

But $ 100 for Sony 300 definitely is a great deal.....If it's the right reader for you...

Thank You mgmuller & HarryT
Long time have I wait for "better or perfect" reader(PRS-600 & 900,nook),but more and more devices is on market (with more and more "faults").In present time I read on PC and primary in xPeria Mini with Aldiko. The Sony 300 is not small as xPeria and not so large and heavy as regular tablet.I think Sony PRS-300 as first reader and first impression with e-ink is god choice.
All "perfect" reader are expensive for first time.
Sorry for My English

And what is your impression of the new models introduced by Sony on September 1st? The PRS-950, in particular, looks like a very nice hardware upgrade.

It looks, however, as if, just like the PRS-900, it will be a US-only product.
