We also hedged our bet by ordering the Amazon cases because we're leaving for a 9-day trip on 9/4. Have to have something to protect our new K3s! If M-Edge releases their new K3 jackets by the end of September, the Amazon cases are going back.

I tried it by cutting out a 3/8" thick piece of cardboard (4.8" x 7.5") and tried it in the case - it seems like the actual Kindle should fit pretty well. I just wanted to have at least some sort of case when I got it, until something nicer is available.

(if you're looking for what I mentioned above, search ebay for "nook pouch")

How do you like that case? I have looked at them as well

Well, it remains to be seen how it'll actually fit (although it seems like it should be ok, with the exception of maybe a few of the buttons might be covered a bit by the elastic). But assuming it does fit ok, it's actually pretty well made, and it seems like it'll be quite protective since it's a hardshell case (it's still flexible, but it's not soft at all) - it's also pretty thin. For $10 - not bad!

That's not a case, that's a sleeve. And as we know a sleeve is useless if it cannot fit the device when the device is in a case.

I asked that question to Amazon. Here is their reply. Not sure it demonstrates understanding of the question ..."has issue of cracking been resolved in new cases?".

Hello,

If an approved Kindle cover is used correctly, it will not cause any damage to the Kindle. However, we’ve also taken the feedback of customers like yours and made sure that the Kindle is not damaged using the cover.

To lock your Kindle into the cover's hinge system, place your Kindle flat against the cover and slide it onto the bottom hinge first. Then pull the top hook down and slide your Kindle in the rest of the way and release the hook so it snaps in place. To remove your
Kindle from the cover, slide the top hook down to unlatch and release the Kindle.

For more information about using your Kindle cover, please visit this Help page:

That's a non-answer if I've ever seen one.

If it's "used correctly" - as in, not opened in the wrong way.

Sounds to me as if the Kindle is still in danger of being cracked if one opens a hinged case in the wrong way.

I wouldn't risk it.

It's my understanding that the damage that has happened to Kindles from the Amazon cover was with the first generation of that cover that didn't have the elastic strap that holds the cover closed. I believe that Amazon added that strap to help prevent that problem. Of course if you don't use the strap you could still pick it up the wrong way because the strap is now on the back rather than the front and picking up the cover upside down is what caused the problem in the first place.

I stayed away from the Amazon case for my K2 but I've ordered the Amazon cover for my K3 because that's going to be the only one I'll be able to get before I leave for vacation on 9/4.

I think that this is mostly a non-issue and anyone who is reasonable careful with their things won't have this problem.

I found this one on bestbuy (not online) for 20 bucks. I guess it's 10 bucks less than the others because it does not say made for Kindle...
