Has anyone on the previous kindles installed comic book reading software..windows or linux type. will it be able to read RTF files. i hear the kindle does have a mic .not used at the moment. also i hear amazon will keep a back up and they can also delete your books remotely which means they can also read your PRIVATE DOCUMENTS remotely ,copy them or use that info to steal from you like credit card details. you may have heard how the book 1984 by Orwell was remotely deleted by Amazon from a students kindle and he sued them This means they must have accessed his kindles files remotely. This means they can read all your private files and copy them and distribute them, delete them, sell them or pass them to police. or a disgruntled amazon employee could steal them or do i.d fraud or even download disgusting dirty child poern on to the kindle to destroy you. in fact these concerns have not been discussed at all in the excitement. perhaps we should discuss them now. in the papers a teacher downloaded child poern onto a rivals laptop to implicate him and steal his job as he was next in line. the rival has been completely destroyed even though a court case proved. he was framed.people spit at him in the street. this means they could frame you easily. |

I don't plan to get an Amazon cover. My experience with my Sony EBRs & iPad has been that I like using the bare-naked device. So after wasting money on the Apple iPad cover, I bought a really easy to use sleeve at Brookstone when I was in the airport a few weeks ago, and it does the protection/transportation job quite nicely. It's called the Express Ballistic Portfolio & cost me $35. I bought Tuff-Luv covers for my Sonys. They are well designed, but I find myself slipping the EBR out of the cover to do actual reading, except when I read at a table where the cover turns into a no-hands reading easel for the EBR. So I'll be looking for a slip cover of some kind for my K3. (Though the easel thing might send me back to the Tuff-Luv.) Last edited by Harmon; 08-06-2010 at 12:06 PM. |

If you want to read comic books you have to get them into a format that the kindle will read. I know there are many people here that have done it. BOb |

As for the child porn, I think I'm much more at risk of being framed by someone I know. Besides, I doubt any individual Amazon employee would have the ability to place something on my Kindle and erase all record of it. If you want to discuss privacy policy, it would be best to start a new thread. This tread is already quite long and it's not really on topic. |

Anything can happen at any time, trust me I am very aware of this, so why worry about any of it...look at the state of the world today in spite of the worry, fears and hand-wringing. Sure has made a difference... |

Yes, the K3 has a mic. The most reasonable current speculation (IMO) is that it may allow spoken annotation of documents in a future firmware update. If you buy a K3 expecting to use it as a free phone at Amazon's expense, I think you will be setting yourself up for disappointment. Amazon backs up only those documents you bought from Amazon. You have to back up your private documents yourself. Yes, theoretically Amazon could read your private files, if you send your private files to Amazon for conversion or transfer, or if you leave Whispernet turned on. If this makes you uncomfortable a Kindle is still useable with Whispernet turned off--or you might consider one of the multitude of fine readers that do not have this issue. To carry really private stuff like your bank break-in plans I would frankly recommend paper, written out by hand, and burned promptly when you don't need them anymore. You might consider some kind of cipher--I understand the Julian cipher is a classic, but there have been great strides taken in recent centuries. Yes, I know about 1984. As a community of people brought together by our passionate interest in all things e-book, we all do. Quote:
I suppose it is technically possible that Amazon could do this. It would be commercial suicide, but it could happen that Amazon decides to wipe itself out in a self-destructive public relations holocaust. If you're worried about it, I recommend you cancel your Amazon order immediately and look into one of the many fine readers made by companies like Astak or CyBook. |

For me, that is one reason not to buy any ebook reader that is hooked up to the company. Quote:
Amazon will have won the war when Overdrive offers primarily Kindle/Mobi editions. So far, this is not the case. In fact, it is becoming harder and harder to find mobi editions at the NY Public Library. Quote:

I like it significantly better than Adept because I am not limited to a set number of registered machines with it (of course, DRM removal is always an option for either, but I am talking about working with the DRM protocol...) Any reader where I have entered the credit card once will retain the hash function (not the credit card) and I can read any other BN ebook on it that was bought with the same card. |

We don't need their trust. They need ours. I'm quite sure they don't particularly trust us not to strip DRM. However if they started snooping on our private documents to stop us, it would likely end up in the news and on the blogoshpere pretty quickly. The fallout would be enormous. It wouldn't be worth it. They'd lose too many customers and potential customers. It would make the 1984 thing look like nothing. As long as I'm not redistributing my liberated books, they would have a hard time claiming damages. They could ban me as a customer but they're the real loser there, too.
