I converted a PDF to ePUB recently and it worked well indeed. I guess it depends on the quality of the PDF.

I also ran the converted ePUB through the Kobo font converter utility available on Mobileread.

I prefer to read ePub books on my Kobo but managed to borrow a library book that was in PDF - as per HarleyB - just changed to landscape and read that way. Not a major problem.
