Interesting, I just downloaded Dune from the library. Have not started it yet. I want to finish Radium Halos and then read the Patricia Ryan books.
Also bought the new Daniel Silva today for my mom. She still has no idea how to operate her Kobo, and I have it with me right now since I was borrowing it to update the firmware for her. So after several subtle hints along the lines of her saying things like 'I wonder if the Daniel Silva is even available' and 'if the Daniel Silva was in ebook, I wonder how hard it would be to get it on the Kobo' I told her I would just buy it and she could pay me back. I gave it a cursory glance as I was liberating it, and it absolutely does not interest me in the slightest, so I am okay with taking the $10 from Mom even though I suppose I could keep a copy of the book. |

I felt Dune and it's first sequel a very interesting read - but once he'd reached Godhood the succeeding story lines became less entertaining .

I just finished The Professor and Other Writings by Terry Castle. It was wonderful! Also, this is the first book I have read in its entirety using text-to-speech. I cannot read a dead-tree book and knit at the same time; being immersed in an exciting sideways-knit twinset pattern, I wanted to make the most of my couch time. I plugged the Kindle in (TTS eats up the battery), selected a slow, male voice, and kept knitting. I found I had to glance at the screen to get over the mispronounced words, but I was able to knit and read at the same time, and retain what I read. Perhaps next time I will turn the voice volume all the way down and see if I can read and knit as long as the pages are turned for me.

Agents of Treachery, a collection of short fiction by top espionage/mystery and spy-genre writers. An anthology like this is pretty rare — most authors in this genre don't bother because it's tough to tell a complicated tale of intrigue in often foreign lands and sometimes historical periods in short form. It's working for me. The first story's by Charles McCarry and it's great writing and reading.

I'm reading a book that is very surprising. "The Book of Adam: Autobiography of the First Human Clone". It is hard scifi wrapped in a very human story. It is one of the discount books that Karen (Koland) does such a great job with in the "Kindle Freebies" thread. I got it free at iBooks just because I prefer the reading app. It's probably the same everywhere else as well

Ever walk through a bookstore and have a cover grab you? Happened this past weekend with Confederates in the Attic: Dispatches from the Unfinished Civil War. New York Times review here.
An interesting look at the sometimes obsessiveness of the South with the Civil War. Kindle version will be available on August 18 |

The book sounds interesting. I'll have to go to Amazon on August 18 to download a sample. Last edited by WT Sharpe; 08-09-2010 at 12:20 PM. |

I've been struggling with Colleen McCullough's 'Antony and Cleopatra' and finally given up on it. I always feel a bit sad when I abandon a book.
![]() Started 'Ordinary Thunderstorms' by William Boyd - one of my go-to authors when I'm a bit down about reading. Superb so far. ![]() |

I've finally given up trying to finish "Julian Comstock" by Robert Charles Wilson. He creates a really intriguing alternate future world ruled by fundamentalist religious sects after the collapse of oil-based economies, but the writing and plot are so flat! Just not worth the time.
