Interesting. My husband always comments on how much faster I read than he does, but I've never had anything to judge it by. I scored 410 wpm and 100% comprehension. But I don't know how much of that was comprehension and how much of it was the fact that I do very well on multiple choice. If they had asked me to fill in the blank, it would have been much lower.
I actually thought I would score higher on wpm. I suspect I read fiction much faster, once I get into the rhythm of the story. |

There is a problem with the test. That problem is that it's on the computer. While reading, I could feel the light from the screen hitting my eyes which made me not read and not pay attention to reading.

Perhaps you have your monitor brightness turned up too high.

I subvocalise when I read - but I also find that reading out loud helps on occasion too. It helps my comprehension if I'm finding passages in non-fiction books hard to understand; and also if I'm struggling to complete something I'm not enjoying reading, but need to for some reason or another.
I wonder if the benefits of reading aloud are somewhat overlooked these days. ![]() |

How quickly I read depends on what I'm reading, of course. A book on Algebra, a suject I took three times and failed twice, would be at slogging through mud speed. A well-written novel would be more at a running across a grassy field speed. Now, a terrible book, horribly written, that is boring, gets read at the speed of light.

Ditto! I have two reading speeds, really fast and really slow. The former I use when I'm in a big hurry, which I usually am for school, and the latter when I'm enjoying something. I wish I could manage something in the middle.
My wife and son both read at one speed, fast. I envy them. When I'm in turtle mode, I'm conscious that I'm basically reading aloud, silently, if that makes any sense. Somewhere I read that there are two distinct reading styles -- you either read everything as if you were reading it aloud, or you just, well, read. (I guess that's what you mean, Sparrow, by subvocalising.) But sometimes I wish I could just turn off those voices in my head. Last edited by corona; 08-08-2010 at 10:07 AM. |

385 wpm with 73% comprehension.
I read 1 or 2 books a week. When I was able to use public transportation for my daily commute, I read 3-4 books a week. My librarian really got to know me back then! |

I read fairly quickly, but I have an excuse.
Back in the early 1960's when I was in grade school, I was among the students who scored high enough (color code purple) on the SRA Reading Kit http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Science...rch_Associates to be allowed some training with a weird gizmo that I now know was a tachistoscope. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tachistoscope I am now a fast reader, and do tend to notice things that flash by quickly. However, correlation does not imply causation, so I do not know if my tachistoscope training created my speed reading, or if I was just born a fast reader and the tachistoscope did absolutely nothing. |

^maybe a little of both? You were already a fast reader with potential to be even faster, and the doodad helped hone your skill even further?
Thinking about speed-reading and what-not, I did pick up a piece of software called EyeQ that looks to be an interesting experience. I have some friends who recommended it to me, and so far, just a few days in, I do notice an improvement. |
