.....Hinduism does not have a founder that we know of. I mean, when you think of Christianity, Jesus Christ is typically considered the founder. Or you think of Islam, Muhammed is typically considered the founder. Buddhism, Buddha. Even with Judaism, you consider Abraham the father of Judaism. But with Hinduism there wasn't a Mr. Hindu back there somewhere. We don't know where Hinduism began or who began Hinduism.

Yes, my Lady, why would you think it's a joke? I just thought it was an interesting statement about Hinduism that sets it apart from all other major religions with which I'm familiar. Perhaps the same could be said of Native American spiritual concepts, but the origins of most religions can be traced to a founding figure (whether real or legendary is another topic). Hinduism cannot.

Because it's just.... Because I can't see other reasons to single it out for a quote. Not that I think it's especially funny. What's so "quoteable" about it?

Many of my quotes have to do with religious topics for no better reason than the fact that books with religious themes constitute a large part of my reading. Comparative religions along with religious and philosophical speculations in general are among my major fields of interest.
I'm not trying to hijack the thread with the religious quotes, and I only offer them—as well those with non-religious themes—as food for thought. I might add that many of the quotes I've collected over the years represent viewpoints with which I strongly disagree, but I share them as well for the same reason. I don't have a problem with it, or the religious quotes. Religion is interesting. It was only that the quote - to me - seemed to lack any kind noteworthyness and memorability that makes for an interesting quote. I was simply puzzled why you'd post it. Because of the "Mr. Hindu" thing I could only imagine it must be meant as a joke.

@Ea: Can you define a book religion and how is Hinduism a book religion?
@WT Sharpe: Although I don't read a lot,(even less religion-based) I do sometimes ponder on the philosophical implication of a LOT of things we do seemingly mindlessly everyday. Oh and quote for the thread, one of Douglas Adams and my personal favourite The major difference between a thing that might go wrong and a thing that cannot possibly go wrong is that when a thing that cannot possibly go wrong goes wrong it usually turns out to be impossible to get at or repair. - Douglas Adams Only because its bloody darn true. |
