"You will fall down seven times, but you'll pick yourself back up eight" — it's a Japanese proverb in City of Dragons by Kelli Stanley. I liked this one as a form of hope, but crime noir-style — you're going to get knocked down no matter what. So it's how you deal with it that counts, of course, whether you're a hustler or a private dick, a spy or a saint. Maybe all of them. Anyway, I liked it.

Reminds me of a recent The Onion article (a satiric news paper) - thought that was hilarious, compared to your quote, which is saddening. |

Glad you folks liked it. It was first published in 1998, but it's still one of The Onion's best, right up there with their Theory of Intelligent Falling.

I can't hardly make it through a chapter of any Terry Pratchett book without having to haul out my commonplace book, or at the very least shake my head and mutter miserably "Damn! I wish I had thought of expressing that thought like that!"

This is from his novel "Eric" Miss Tick said, "There isn't a way things should be. There's just what happens and what we do." as is this... Interestingly enough, the gods of the Disc have never bothered much about judging the souls of the dead, and so people only go to hell if that's where they believe in their deepest heart that they deserve to go. Which they won't do if they don't know about it. this explains why it is important to shoot missionaries on sight. |

.....College teachers in most disciplines are happy when their students have had significant exposure to the subject before college. Not teachers in history. History professors in college routinely put down high school history courses. A colleague of mine calls his survey of American history “Iconoclasm I and II,” because he sees his job as disabusing his charges of what they learned in high school. In no other field does this happen. Mathematics professors, for instance, know that non-Euclidean geometry is rarely taught in high school, but they don’t assume that Euclidean geometry was mistaught. Professors of English literature don’t presume that Romeo and Juliet was misunderstood in high school. Indeed, history is the only field in which the more courses students take, the stupider they become.
