*The folks here are readers and/or writers. That's not my reson really, no more than 20%. But it is the key to the quality of the site. People of culture. The cream, the educated ones.

*I come here to learn from experts and 'amateurs' (I use that word in its original sense -- passionate lovers of an ideal). Once in a while I have a concrete question, of course. But what I learn mostly is about the different branches of the art of living 40%

*I come here to contribute what little I can. Being an exaggerated words dealer that is quite one of the main reasons (I suffer of prolixity benigna). Posting helps in learning to post. 40%

*I come here for members' generosity of thought and advice, for their differing insights, for their wit and intelligence ... yep, for the virtual friendship, too. Big issue for me and source of much joy. 50% at times, other times 100%

There is an other reason. This is my only posting activity ever, and it will continue to be so. I find the virtuality of it, its sociology, its metaphysics, absolutely fascinating. The virtual is now part of the real reality. Who does not want to know how. I do not give a value to this reason, but is probably the real fuel, together with the friendship.

The oercentages do not add to 100, but why should they in a virtual world populated by avatars?

There is only one problem and it it is related, as Ea mentions above, to one of the most fascinating charms of the site, the internalionality. With European members it is fine, we are in sync. With Americans it is fine, although when I go to bed they prepare for an early dinner on the East Coast. West Coasters starts to be a problem except with those that wake up early or go to bed very very late like dreams or kk. But with the Aussie that are really the most colorful of them all, and often the sharpest, it is almost desperate to be in sync. With them I am living at least 3 Lady Hawk scenes. The administration cannot postpone time travelling any more.

Other discussion groups and forums I've been a member of, tended to be dominated by americans. Hence, most of the activity and the good discussions took place when it was evening in USA and I was asleep. It's much better here (for me at least), because it's more mixed.

All of what you suggested in the first post, though some are more important than others. As to whether one stays the course, that depends on the quality of other contributors - which is mostly excellent, informative, often funny and emotive.

However, like one or two other members (I shall not mention) there is an increasing irritation with some less quality posting in the Lounge !

When I first got my 505, I struggled with the learning curve of formats, Calibre and 3rd party software. I like to post here because kind people helped me back then, and I'd repay their help poorly if I didn't respond in kind.

I started on mobileread, because back in 2006 it was the only place to get information about the newly minted field of ebook readers and as a new owner of a PRS 500, I desperately needed that information. I stayed because MR is a dreadful vampiric entity that sucks all the time out of your world

I post primarily to ask questions. The number of folks here who are knowledgeable is quite high.

I think that the number two thing that keeps me here is the library. I've downloaded just from here enough for me to read the rest of the year. For my taste, special thanks go to Patricia and Harry!

I enjoy the fellowship, but if you folks didn't know what you were talking about, your fellowship wouldn't be enough! And I very much appreciate that a high percentage of members are ladies and gentlemen.

Started because of the techincal advice. Learned to add/change functionality fo my ereader. Learned to [cough] deDRM [cough]. Stayed for the company -- about half of the new books I buy are recommended by members.
