The retail pragmatist in me wonders how they will compete with more mainstream vendors like Sony, Amazon, and B&N, given the drastic reduction in price we have seen recently from them. I am not sure of the price point but perhaps $299 would even be wishful thinking. I would have to ask myself why not a Kindle DX for $80 more - larger screen, better performance, wifi, (Free) 3G etc etc

). But, being from the wet part of the Pacific Northwest, I'm not big on solar. 90-95% of my reading will be inside. |

Although I agree that being solar powered has me wondering how well the device will work, I must say it's a good idea. This should attract the "green-minded" customers out there. After all if I recall correctly weren't ebook readers once being advertised as being green, in addition to using little energy? The Papyrus is just trying to make it fully green

.Also having the device solar powered should eliminate the need to replace batteries in the future. So it should reduce some of its customer service requirements and costs. This should also attract more international customers. So to me the general idea of a solar powered device is cool. We'll see how well it works when the Papyrus is released. |

I agree, I like the idea of solar power; what I wonder about is how reliable it will be if solar is the ONLY way to power it. Is there some reason there couldn't be a back-up plug in?

				Solar-power vs Micro-USB for charging

			Uhm,

regarding the solar-power issue. I read the following on their spec's page for the Papyrus: - Micro-USB 2.0 with data transfer & power supply So the Papyrus is not only dependent on solarpower, but apparently can be recharged either from a PC or the power-outlet. See on this page, right column, bottom line: http://www.innoversal.com.tw/en-us/p...s/papyrus.aspx

I got tired of wondering about the charging options of the Papyrus so I e-mailed Innoversal and asked. Just got an answer from them. And I quote:

"Dear Sir Thanks your inquiry. The old article showed the concept of our product. We had tried to enable epaper by solar cell and it's worked but in our product we embed 3G module it's need more power to support so we embed battery inside. The correct version is we did not put solar cell module inside and our device need charge by USB. The product launch is on schedule. Thank you Best Regards" That blog article with the mention of solar was dated in Jan, 2009. Seems as though it didn't work out and there is now no solar at all; the device is recharged via the USB cable. Last edited by gastan; 07-18-2010 at 10:08 PM. |

Although it is too bad to completely lose the solar, as an option.

![]() ![]() Just checked out the website, and as of yesterday, Mr. Chen announced the official release date for the Papyrus, 16 August. This is GREAT news, I've been so looking forward to this device, I'm ordering mine as soon as possible! Here's the notice: http://cooperchen.blogspot.com/2010/...t-2010816.html Last edited by dpayment; 07-28-2010 at 08:35 AM. |

It says in August, not September. Well, if only I were a bit more patient, I would've bought this...
