I'm reading Lincoln's Sword by Debra Doyle and James D. Macdonald. It just came out this week, and so far it's really interesting.

The only thing I've tried to read of Prachett's before is The Last Continent. I didn't get very far in that one, so maybe Prachett just isn't the writer for me?
The Last Continent is probably for hard-core Pratchett fans and Australians (the Venn overlap steams at the ears about it). I'd guess the ones to go for are 'Guards! Guards!', 'A Hatful of Sky', and 'Small Gods'. The latter is the only work on theology you'll ever need.

It's one of the first books I've read on my Kindle that I've actually had to use the dictionary on, and it's been fun trying out that feature. Example: "propinquity" (the state of being close to someone or something: proximity.) And it has lines like this: "A wisp of black hair is escaped from her headscarf: Jacob wants it."

All in all I'm really enjoying it. I was a fan of Cloud Atlas as well.
Replying to my own post here to say that I've just finished it, and enjoyed it greatly. Kind of a not-as-detailed "Shogun," with spells of stream-of consciousness and an occasional jump to a different narrator. Sounds like a mess, I know, but it works, at least for me. Recommended.

That's a word I've never come across before. The Kindle dictionary can be a real life-saver.

Just finished up Tales from the Green Book 1 by SD Best, a book I picked up because of MobileRead and an author special.

It's definitely a YA book, with a protagonist that is a typical kid who is bored out of his mind and has terrible dreams about a land that his grandfather told him about as a child. But is that land more real than it seems?

I liked the story a lot, as the characters were very compelling and that's a big thing for me. There are, however, a few clunky moments and it has a rather unfortunate infodump towards the end. But I overall, I enjoyed it and will be getting book two.

Now it's time for the Long Goodbye!

Too true. I'm a pretty hard-core Pratchett fan but The Last Continent did nothing for me.

Yes, it does. I am a lover of silence, and I hate any sensory overload in general (perfume, noise, visual). Sometimes I have a feeling I live on the wrong planet

Finished "The Taken" - Inger Ash Wolfe - the second in this Canadian-based series (after "The Calling") - the style reminds me of a Canadian version of Val McDermid - very strange serial killers. The protagonist (Hazel Micallef) is a flawed but enjoyable quirky detective. Inger Ash Wolfe is a pseudonym for "a well-known and well-regarded North American literary novelist" - anyone know who she/he really is?
